We've all had them or heard them... stories gone wrong because someone misread the calendar, asked for the wrong day off at work, double-scheduled or missed entirely. Don't ask me about the Rosh Hashanah we went hungry for the whole two days because we were a day off on the planned store run and food prep! But more than holidays and dinner dates... I'm always promising to give myself a break from housework on Rosh Chodesh, only to find it's too late to make arrangements. I'm always planning to observe kiddush levanah , dancing and singing psalms under the light of the waxing moon, and then realizing I've missed it again. Not this year. This year I want to live by the cycle, not just look it up. So I made myself the Jewish calendar I've always looked for, where days start with night and the moon aligns with holy days, a calendar to help me live in sacred time, with all the blessings I know I'll need this year at the back. If you'd like to download your own copy, it's right here. Just print the cover on cardstock, the innards of your choice (with or without American mainstream holidays) on paper, staple, and fold. Sacred Time Cover Sacred Time 5770 Clutch Calendar and Blessings , or Sacred Time 5770 Clutch Calendar and Blessings (American) A donation of $5 will go towards continuing my Jewish education.

Sacred Time
Things to Do in Advance
Allow time to view the video and review this section of the leader’s guide before meeting with your class. Determine what you will cover in the available class time.  Plan for any of the Optional Activities you would like to use and how you will integrate the work with the class.  Acquaint yourself with the following terms: rites of passage, Sabbath, sacred, and secular (see glossary).  Consult with members of your clergy when appropriate.  Finally, duplicate any materials you plan to distribute to the group.
PURPOSE OF THIS SESSION (10 minutes) Prepare your group to watch the video.  (Read or paraphrase) In the video a distinction will be made between sacred time and secular or “ordinary” time.  What is the difference?  Distribute copies o f “Session III—Terms” found at the back of this section.  Take a few moments to discuss these terms. One might wish to consider the Greek words used in Christian scriptures, chronos —clock time and cairos —God’s time.  Many people believe that sacred time is not separate from everyday or ordinary time, but rather is hidden or obscured by human systems.  For some religious people—for example, those who live in monasteries—nearly all time is sacred.  Followers of Islam view all time as potentially sacred.  For other religious people time is divided into the holy, and not yet holy.

Churning of the Milky Ocean
The time we are living in is the great churning or the great turning of the ages. Its a slow process but we are nearing the completion of a 26,000 year journey. The time we are living in can be thought of as a sacred time as we are becoming aware of a great cycle of time referred to as the precession of the equinoxes. It is this awareness which brings humanity into a new time revered by all our ancient ancestors. We are entering a sacred time. Eliade pages on this site: - Summaries of the 4 chapters: 1 Sacred Space 3 Sacred Nature 4 Sacred Self Comment: 1 Criticisms 2 Eliade's Sacred SACRED TIME Eliade introduces his section on sacred time by claiming that for religious man there were two types of time, sacred and profane, the former experienced in religious festivals, the latter in ordinary daily life. Religious festivals reactualised sacred events from the mythical origins, so participating in them meant stepping out of ordinary time and into sacred time, the time of origins. Religious festivals occurred periodically, so sacred time was also circular. By contrast, modern, non-religious man does not experience sacred time. He has his periodic celebrations, but they are not experienced as sacred, as involving contact with the divine.

Fantastic Fiction Authors H Ursula Hegi ... Awards Sacred Time A novel by Ursula Hegi The Bronx, 1953. Leonora and Floria are sisters-in-law and friends, dancing with each other, laughing with each other, arguing with each other. But when Floria's daughter dies in a terrible accident involving Leonora's son, Anthony, family ties are put to the ultimate test. Floria struggles to find a way through her grief, gaining solace in isolation; Leonora faces the world afresh, a single woman, mother to a son whose burden of guilt weights heavy. With warmth, humour and consummate storytelling, Hegi follows the family through the last half of the twentieth century as they try to find meaning in tragedy, finding, instead, their own paths to redemption. REDEFINING SACRED TIME
It is with this thought in mind that we need to look at the significance of the stories of Genesis and Exodus. Abraham is presented as an individual chosen by God. A deal (a covenant) is made according to which Abraham's descendants are promised their own land, and this promise is repeated with Abraham's grandson, renamed Israel. In later centuries the importance of the covenant is reasserted with Moses, who is to lead his people toward their promised land even if he will not live to reach it himself.
These are presented as historical events, distinct points in time. The religious ceremonies of the Jewish people, unlike those we find in tribal traditions or in Asia, center on reenactments of historical events, most notably the manner in which their ancestors under Moses escaped slavery in Egypt. They are performed in a yearly cycle, but they do not reflect a mythological world somehow outside of history. Instead, they mark a definite past in which a promise has been made and they anticipate a future in which that promise will be fulfilled when a new anointed leader, a new messiah, comes to restore the Temple in the land of Israel.
Christianity, which appears as an offshoot of Judaism, maintains much of this original imagery. Jesus is seen as the promised messiah (in Greek

By: Selina Venier FROM the moment Brisbane archdiocese's Pray 2010 initiative opened its doors on the evening of July 7 until the final note was sung at the closing Vigil on July 10, an atmosphere of prayerful reflection, learning, sharing and fellowship filled the broad gathering space of Clairvaux MacKillop College and St Bernard's parish and school, Upper Mt Gravatt. It was described as Archbishop John Bathersby's "gift" to the Church, and his opening address reflected his long-term desire to bring the people of God together "in a gathering as large as Pray 2010". "I never dreamt of missing Mass on Sundays," Archbishop Bathersby said of the childhood memories underpinning his faith and on-going desire to spread the Gospel. "My grandparents were excellent Catholics ... (and) my grandfather ... had a profound effect on my life. "I loved daily Mass even as a six-year-old."
