The team was formed in 1964 and was a founding member of the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) in that same year. In both 1986 and 2007 the College of Charleston Sailing Team won both the Intercollegiate Dinghy National Championship and the Leonard B. Since 1978, the team has qualified seventeen times for all annual national collegiate sailing championships, winning thirteen of those events.
