Articles, information, books, and support about schizophrenia and other major mental illnesses.

Welcome to the Larry Robison Website
This web site is dedicated to my brother Larry Robison, and to the families of his victims. The state of Texas refused to assist my mother in obtaining proper long-term mental health treatment for Larry Robison. Treatment was denied due to Larry not being violent. Persons with certain types of schizophrenia may become violent after having gone without treatment for long periods of time. This happened to Larry who in the midst of an extreme psychotic episode killed five people. This is the one and only act of violence Larry ever committed both before and after the incident. Larry Robison was sentenced to death and executed on January 21, 2000, despite pleas from around the world to spare his life. Please don't believe that this could not happen in your family. Our family has learned the hard way that it happens more often than you think! ~~ Vickie Robison-Barnett TO THE VICTIMS FAMILIES I embrace you with all of God's love and power to heal you from the pain, hurt and sorrow you have suffered. Mere words will never express the agony that I feel inside for you. I do not know why this tragedy happened and all of our lives have been forever changed. There are times that life offers us no rational explanation for such things. I do not want to intrude in your lives, but I do want you to know that I would like to reach out to you if you are willing. I place my plea to you here in hopes that you will see it and will contact me. I am grieving with you and for you.

Welcome to the website: Sleeping with the Angels: A Spiritual Journey through Schizophrenia It is my pleasure to introduce this manuscript to you. It has been written with a lot of research, love and care. It has been written from the depth of my seven years experience with schizophrenia, in the hope to help afflicted people, family members and friends but also in order to interest the wider community of mental healthcare workers, from psychiatrists to nurses and other therapists. Schizophrenia affects 2% of the world population. Mental Health Care issues are on the rise world wide. Traditional medicine still treats schizophrenia and other mental wellness issues in bio-medical terms. The rich inner life of the experience is ignored by what is referred to as 'school' psychiatry. This book is written from the inside of schizophrenia. It is intended to lay open the rich inner life of this experience with its imagery, mythological and spiritual signification. Schizophrenia is an indivduation process, filled with the rich experience of the deep structures of the psyche. May this book help in approaching schizophrenia for what it is, not primarily an illness, but a deep transformation process of the Self. May this book help in fostering a loving understanding of this profound process which not only affects the afflicted but also family members and friends.

30 Mar 2001 Throughout recorded history, the disease we now know as schizophrenia has been a source of bewilderment. Those suffering from the illness once were thought to be possessed by demons and were feared, tormented, exiled or locked up forever. In spite of advances in the understanding of its causes, course and treatment, schizophrenia continues to confound both health professionals and the public. It is easier for the average person to cope with the idea of cancer than it is to understand the odd behavior, hallucinations or strange ideas of the person with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia Table of Contents As with many mental disorders, the causes are poorly understood. Friends and family commonly are shocked, afraid or angry when they learn of the diagnosis. Expectations become more realistic as schizophrenia is better understood as a brain disease that requires ongoing treatment. Demystification of the illness, along with recent insights from basic neuroscience, gives new hope for finding more effective treatments for an illness that previously carried a grave prognosis. Schizophrenia is characterized by a broad range of unusual behaviors that cause profound disruption in the lives of the patients suffering from the condition and in the lives of the people around them. Schizophrenia strikes without regard to gender, race, social class or culture.

This is a time of hope for people with schizophrenia and their families. Research is gradually leading to new and safer medications and unraveling the complex causes of the disease. Scientists are using many approaches from the study of molecular genetics to the study of populations to learn about schizophrenia. Methods of imaging the brains structure and function hold the promise of new insights into the disorder. Schizophrenia As An Illness Schizophrenia is found all over the world. The severity of the symptoms and long-lasting, chronic pattern of schizophrenia often cause a high degree of disability. Medications and other treatments for schizophrenia, when used regularly and as prescribed, can help reduce and control the distressing symptoms of the illness. However, some people are not greatly helped by available treatments or may prematurely discontinue treatment because of unpleasant side effects or other reasons. Even when treatment is effective, persisting consequences of the illness lost opportunities, stigma, residual symptoms, and medication side effects may be very troubling.

    Overview
Our understanding of schizophrenia has evolved since its symptoms were first catalogued by German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin in the late 19th century (Andreasen, 1997a). Even though the cause of this disorder remains elusive, its frightening symptoms and biological correlates have come to be quite well defined. Yet misconceptions abound about symptoms: schizophrenia is neither nor Table 4-6 Schizophrenia is characterized by profound disruption in cognition and emotion, affecting the most fundamental human attributes: language, thought, perception, affect, and sense of self. The array of symptoms, while wide ranging, frequently includes psychotic manifestations, such as hearing internal voices or experiencing other sensations not connected to an obvious source (hallucinations) and assigning unusual significance or meaning to normal events or holding fixed false personal beliefs (delusions). No single symptom is definitive for diagnosis; rather, the diagnosis encompasses a pattern of signs and symptoms, in conjunction with impaired occupational or social functioning (DSM-IV). Symptoms are typically divided into positive and negative symptoms (see Table 4-7 Table 4-6. DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia
