School Bus Safety
Twenty-three million students nationwide ride a school bus to and from school each day. Wherever you live, the familiar yellow school bus is one of the most common motor vehicles on the road. It is also the safest. School buses manufactured after January 1, 1977 must meet more federal motor vehicle safety standards than any other type of motor vehicle. In fact, during normal school transportation hours over the past 10 years, school buses are 87 times safer than passenger cars, light trucks, and vans, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Getting On and Off the Bus Safely Because getting on and off the bus is the most dangerous part of the school bus ride, the loading and unloading area is called the “Danger Zone.” This area-which extends ten feet in front of the bus, ten feet on each side of the bus, and behind the bus-is where children are at greatest risk of not being seen by the bus driver. Throughout the year, especially at the start of school, children need to be taught how to get on and off the school bus safely. Parents should help their children learn and follow these common-sense practices:

    School Bus Safety
Children are at greatest risk when they are getting on or off the school bus. Most of the children killed in bus-related crashes are pedestrians, five to seven years old. They are hit by the school bus or by motorists illegally passing a stopped bus. In neighborhoods, near schools and bus stops, drivers need to take special care because children do not behave like adults. It is important to be reminded about the safety of students being transported to and from school and school-related activities. Federal law requires that manufacturers meet stringent safety standards for vehicles used by or for a school district. Please see our very popular brochures below.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY! Although school buses are the safest form of highway transportation, approximately ten children die every year in a school bus accident. And many other children are injured. Below are some facts and a school bus safety guide.
    • School buses are the safest form of highway transportation. The most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the school bus. Pedestrian fatalities (while loading and unloading school buses) account for approximately three times as many school bus-related fatalities, when compared to school bus occupant fatalities. The loading and unloading area is called the “Danger Zone” The “Danger Zone” is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver (ten feet in front of the bus where the driver may be too high to see a child, ten feet on either side of the bus where a child may be in the driver’s blind spot, and the area behind the school bus). Half of the pedestrian fatalities in school bus-related crashes are children between 5 and 7 years old.

Look both ways when you cross the street, Use your eyes Before your feet Updates September 23, 2010 Posted by Jim Britten Davis Drivers; we, in the training department are changing the timing on how we do driver evaluations. Starting this year we will be doing your evaluation during your month of birth. We will follow you around and check off everything you inspect on the bus you are driving. We will ride with you, and we will be doing your physical assessment screening test. We are still using the 40 pound bag for the front to rear carry. Our in classroom recertification training will be done differently. Instead of many classes and few drivers we will be having fewer classes and invite drivers to the unit (2 – 9) that they are in need of most. See my news posting 1 November below. September 12, 2010

If you ride a school bus, make sure that you remember the following rules: Street Smarts
          • Never run into the street. Look and listen for cars and trucks to the left, then to the right, and then to the left again. Never go between parked cars to cross the street. Always walk with a friend or a parent.
          The Danger Zone
There is a 10-foot area around the bus known as the Danger Zone. The bus driver is not able to see anything in this area. The Danger Zone is right in front of the bus and the area all around the rear wheels and the back of the bus. Waiting for the Bus
          • Be at the bus stop 5 minutes early. Stay away from the curb. Be quiet while you wait for the bus.
          Riding the Bus
          • Find a seat, sit down and face forward. Follow directions and listen to the bus driver. Keep the aisles clear.
          Getting Off the Bus
          • Cross the street in front of the bus while it is still stopped. Never cross the street behind the bus.

Can you put the safety puzzle pieces together? See the jigsaw puzzle page. This sign means you are near a crosswalk in a school zone.
    • When school is opening in the morning and closing in the afternoon, the area around the school is a very busy and crowded. There will be many children using the crosswalk. Car drivers, bikers and in-line skaters must stop to allow people in the crosswalk to cross the street. It is important to look carefully to the left, right and left again if you have to cross the street.
DANGER ZONES AROUND A STOPPED SCHOOL BUS When you are waiting for the school bus, you should wait at the bus stop, and stand well back from the curb. When you get off the bus:
    • Look to the rear of the bus before you step off the bottom step. Our friends at the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute tell us that more and more motorists are passing stopped school buses on the right shoulder - where the door is. Take (five giant steps) straight out the bus door, and out of the danger zone. Make sure you have eye contact with the driver, and wait for the driver to signal you before you cross in front of the bus. Never go back for anything you have left on the bus.

    Avoid the Danger Zones!
    School Bus Safety!
To be safe when they travel to and from school, follow these simple safety rules: AT THE BUS STOP:
    • Always walk to the bus stop. Never run. Walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left facing traffic. Always go to the bus stop about five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. While at the bus stop, wait in a safe place away from the road. Do not run and play while waiting. Never speak to strangers at the bus stop and never get into the car with a stranger. Always go straight home and tell you parents if a stranger tries to talk to you or pick you up. Wait for the bus to arrive, watch for red flashing lights and the stop sign to be extended, and cross only when all traffic has stopped. Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
    ON THE BUS:
    • Go directly to a seat. Remain seated and facing forward for the entire ride. Talk quietly (so the driver will not be distracted). If you need to talk to the bus driver: wait for the bus to stop, raise your hand, and call the driver's name. Never throw things on the bus or out the windows. Never play with the emergency exits.
