The Operation Safe Stop Reporting Form for April 15, 2010 enforcement activities is available. New York Legislators Announce School Bus Driver Appreciation Day On April 5, the New York Senate adopted a resolution declaring October 24, 2008, School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. The resolution was sponsored by Senator William Larkin, who sponsored similar resolutions in the past two years, and co-sponsored by 21 other state senators. Recognizing school bus drivers for the safe transportation of more than 2 million children to school each day in New York, the resolution will be transmitted to Governor David Paterson. The resolution also affirms the tremendous responsibility required to serve as a school bus driver. It notes that drivers ensure children are met by an adult at their bus stop or returned to school, and that drivers play a part in the fight against terrorism by reporting suspicious activity or people seen on their bus routes. School bus driver Maureen Moore initially contacted Larkin about designating School Bus Driver Appreciation Day and has continued to work with his office in drafting the resolutions.

The special week commemorates the safe service that school buses provide to families, as they provide one of the safest modes of transportation for children. Each year, Florida drivers illegally pass school buses nearly two million times. Each illegal pass-by could result in a tragic injury or fatality of a student. The inconvenience of an extra few seconds spent waiting for a stopped school bus is insignificant compared to the loss of a child's life, which is why Florida’s departments of Education Transportation , and Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles , have teamed up to develop the Stop on Red, Kids Ahead campaign to remind drivers of the laws and safe practices to take when approaching a school bus. Drivers who improperly pass a stopped school bus commit a moving violation subject to citation and will be required to complete a basic Driver Improvement Course upon conviction.

School bus safety
Those familiar yellow and black vehicles are the safest form of transportation in the country, considering the many miles and the travel conditions buses undergo to transport children to and from school, sports and other events. This is due, in large part to the many safety features built into school buses. School buses are designed to take a great deal of impact, not to crush in event of roll over, and to cushion children with compartmentalization between the seats in the event of a crash or a fast stop.
Definition of a school bus
In Wisconsin, a school bus is a motor vehicle which carries 10 or more passengers in addition to the operator, or a motor vehicle painted with legally required school bus markings, glossy school bus yellow trimmed in black, for the purpose of transporting:
  • Pupils to or from a public school or a private school or pupils to or from a technical college when required.

Important: Vehicle owners can be charged if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus. Fines range from $400 to $2,000.
Drivers - always stop for the bus
Whether on a city street, highway or county road, and regardless of the speed limit and the number of lanes, motorists travelling in both directions must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing . A flashing stop arm will swing out while passengers are boarding or leaving the bus. (The only exception: on highways separated by a median, traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop). Once all passengers have boarded, the STOP arm will fold away. Do not start moving until the red lights have stopped flashing and the bus begins to move.
PENALTIES FOR NOT STOPPING
First offence: $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points
Each subsequent offence: $1,000 to $4,000, six demerit points and possible jail time up to six months
Kids - staying safe on and around the bus
School bus travel is extremely safe. In Ontario, over 800,000 students are transported daily in school buses that travel 1.9 million kilometres every school day. Although injuries to school bus passengers are rare, they most often happen outside the bus as students are boarding and leaving the bus or crossing the street. Remember these tips:

    See More About:
The greatest risks to a child are posed while he or she is near a bus, not inside it. iStockphoto zSB(3,3) School buses are fairly safe forms of transportation compared to other vehicles. Many parents may not realize that the biggest school bus safety risks are posed to a grade-schooler when he or she is near a bus, not while riding inside it. An average of 20 school-age children die in school transportation-related crashes each year, and as many as 14 of those are pedestrian accidents, meaning that the kids were outside of the school bus or van when the accident occurred. Many were either struck by a passing car or by the school bus itself. Younger grade-schoolers are particularly at risk: At least one half of those killed in school vehicle-related accidents were between 5 and 7 years old. Younger children tend to act more impulsively, hurrying to get on or off the bus, and are less likely to be attuned to traffic dangers. They're also shorter, which means there are two big dangers to their safety: they can't see over cars, hedges, and other obstacles and drivers, in turn, can't see them.

Home School Bus Safety Training Program Development Welcome Written by Drew Eppley Thursday, 09 July 2009 08:04 This may become a developmental resource for our project. The goal is produce a professional safety training video series that is easy to access and has the greatest outreach to all students, faculty, residents and parents of Sycamore Community Schools. One major objective is posting public surveys, interactive feedback portals and content that will maximize the involvement of the project and generate the best up-to-date information  that will be approved for the public, State of Ohio and improve bus safety across the nation. As a current school bus driver myself, I will devote as much time as needed to produce informative, yet entertaining, videos that will demonstrate effective strategies that reduce casualties, increase awareness and understanding in the dangers of school bus safety. - Drew Last Updated on Monday, 13 July 2009 15:53
