        School Bus Safety
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, school buses are one of the safest forms of transportation. But there are still dangers, particularly before and after riding the bus.
It is important to remind children about safety on the street and on the school bus. Elementary school children in particular are at high risk of being hit by a car when crossing the street because they:
        • Cannot judge the speed or distance of moving vehicles Are easily distracted and can focus only on one thing at a time Cannot determine the direction of sounds Do not understand how much time and distance is necessary for a vehicle to stop Are hidden by parked cars and bushes Making matters worse, there is an increase in the number of pre-school children being sent to school programs on school buses.

School Bus Safety
Safety Dept. School bus safety is an important consideration when making an overall school safety plan. While we often think of school safety as involving the school building itself, students can still face dangers while on the school bus, and schools need to take precautions to keep the kids safe while they are riding to school. School buses are huge vehicles, and children need to be taught how to stay safe around them. School bus safety begins by teaching children to stay away from the bus while it is stopping. They should not approach the bus until the doors are opened by the bus driver. Also, when passing in front of a bus, students should be at least 10 feet in front of the bus. Most school buses are now equipped with arms to show students where to walk when passing in front. School bus safety requires that students are taught to respect this distance.
School Safety
School safety also involves dealing with bullies and other danger from peers. Children should be taught what to do if they feel like they are in danger while on the school bus. They need to be told which staff members they should contact if dangerous behavior is spotted on the bus. Also, children should be taught never to participate in horseplay while on the school bus. They should remain seated so that they do not distract the driver. Flying objects, such as paper wads, are particularly dangerous on a school bus, because they can hit the driver and cause a distraction.

School Bus Safety
Message from Elmer the Safety Elephant
Here are things to remember waiting for the bus:
  • Arrive five minutes ahead of your school bus pick up time. Wait for the school bus far from the side of road, away from the traffic. Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before advancing. Board the bus using the handrail. Never pick up anything off the ground around the outside of the bus. Tell the driver first and wait until they say it is OK or ask an adult to help you.
Here are things to remember while riding the bus:
  • Never run, push, shout or throw things in the bus. It is forbidden to stick anything out of the window. Sit promptly and sit facing forward with your backpack at your feet. Talk quietly so the driver can concentrate on the road. Save your snack to eat at home, not on the bus.
Here are things to remember for getting off the bus:
  • Take two large steps away from the school bus door and then turn and take ten giant steps down the sidewalk. The bus driver must be able to see you and will give you a signal, if you need to cross. Go straight home and do not take detours.

School Bus Safety
By Alex Did you know that the school bus is one of the safest forms of transportation today? A school bus is a large, painted vehicle that takes children to school and returns them to their homes in many countries throughout the world. In the United States and Canada, most school buses are painted yellow. School buses are also very common in the United Kingdom, but they are not widely used in Europe. A f ull sized school bus can seat forty five to seventy five or more students. Most buses are paid for by local school districts. Here are some tips to help kids be safe around a bus: Getting to the Bus Stop
  • You should get to the bus stop 5 minutes before the bus arrives. DO NOT run across the road to catch the bus! When crossing the street, always look left, right, and left again. Cars will come from the left first. If there are no sidewalks where you are walking, walk on the side of the road where you are walking against traffic (you can see the cars coming towards you rather than coming from behind you).

School Bus Safety
School bus safety involves the cooperation of a large number of people: the bus driver; each rider; pedestrians and bikers who move in and around the bus, and other drivers. The bus itself is another crucial factor. This article details some of the elements that contribute to school bus safety.
