Science is a subject that is particularly important to the development of young minds because in learning science you learn many other important skills. Scientific knowledge helps in almost every other subject that your child will study. With a good understanding of science your child can better understand the world around him or her. Below are just a few examples of how doing science projects can help to make your child smarter.
Scientific method
In doing science projects children learn about the scientific method. The scientific process requires a great deal of thought. For example, a child starts out with a theory and through a process of experimentation to determine whether or not that theory is true. In repeating this thought process over and over children can develop a maturity in thinking analytically to be able to solve problems for themselves.

  • Creating an experiment for a science fair can be a fun yet challenging task. Science fair projects teach students important facts about the natural world through the data they collect and can also show them the practical implications of science. Students learn how the scientific method seeks to answer a specific research question, which is the central concern of the experiment that is conducted.
  • Oil Spill Cleanup
  • Cleaning up oil spills is difficult to do. An experiment that will show you this involves filling three separate containers with water. Use plastic or metal mixing bowls for best results. Pour a small amount of motor oil into each container, and use three separate methods for attempting to clean it up, such as: absorb the oil with sand or padding from a diaper for your first attempt. Scoop it out or scrape it off the top of the water with a cup or spoon. Strain it out of the water with a porous piece of material such as cheesecloth. Record your results, and report on it in your report summary.

    Teach-in
A Teach-in was a method of non violent protest against the U.S. government's involvement in Vietnam . The idea was inspired by a Professor Marshall Sahlins who taught anthropology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . Staff of the University had originally wanted to strike to protest the war, but under pressure from the institution and the U.S. government they opted for participation in teach-ins. The idea was to allow a forum for opposition towards the war. Students and faculty would meet at night in university facilities to argue, ask questions, challenge assumptions and learn about the Vietnam war.

The originators and leading proponents of the movement are the Discovery Institute and Phillip E. Johnson

    Parents
We are glad you are encouraging and supporting your child to participate in Washington Open's Science Fair. The fair is a great opportunity for children to practice the process of formulating a project, implementing it and sharing it with the school community.
Children benefit in many ways from doing a science fair project, not just in terms of improved science knowledge. Science fair projects teach problem solving skills, enhance written and oral communication skills and make them experts on a topic interesting to them.
We encourage you to help your child develop a genuine interest in the project and let that interest guide you. Usually, the best work is done by students who are motivated and inspired by their own curiosity about what they are investigating, but the best part is the feeling of accomplishment that comes with the completion of a project they consider their own, regardless of its sophistication.
    Students
You are about to start a very fun project. Making a project for the Science Fair allows you to learn about a topic of your choice in a scientific way. All questions are important and there is no "right" answer.

  • Science fairs are fun, exciting and educational. By the time a child is in seventh grade, she's ready to commit to a larger project, one that takes time and effort and thought. Science fair projects teach a number of things above and beyond the science in question. They also teach a child how to plan and manage a project, how to compete with grace and how to present a project to audience.
  • Creating Craters
  • The hypothesis for this project is that the size and speed of a meteorite affects the size of the impact crater it makes. The student needs plaster of Paris, three cookie sheets and a tape measure. The student mixes the plaster of Paris and spreads it into the cookie sheets. While the plaster is still damp, he drops blobs of plaster onto the plaster in the cookie sheets. He uses blobs of different sizes and drops them from different heights. He should use at least three different heights and three different sizes, dropping blobs of the same size from different heights onto the first cookie sheet. He then drops bigger blobs onto the next sheet and progresses up to the third sheet. When the plaster dries, he measures the craters and compares the depth and diameter of each based on the size of the object and how far it was dropped from.
