Sendai Science Museum
Collections and Exhibits
Sendai Science Museum has three main exhibition halls.
There are
(1)The natural history exhibition hall (treated with Life, present and past geologically related exhibits).
(2) The Science and Technology exhibition hall ( physics, chemistry related exhibits).
(3) Daily living and science exhibition hall ( science as related to our daily living exhibits).
The museum also has an interesting rock garden, science playground and other science related facilities out side the building.
The building itself is an exhibition of science. This museum has computer system by which everyone can locate quickly any of the exhibits in the building and easy to access to reference data on the many exhibits. A concept of this comprehensive science museum is that you can actually operate the equipment, enabling us to learn and understand more fully the operation of scientific principles. Updates: (last update April 15)
It would appear that we are seeing the fruit of our labours. In 2008, our grand opening spurned two national surveys, one of those by Angus-Reid. One year later, they repeated the poll to see the effect and change in opinion across the nation after Canada's first Creation museum (BVCSM) opened its doors. The results of that poll were surprising - click here to read about it.

The goals of the Grassroots Science
    Museums Collaborative are to:
    Improve the public understanding of
    science and technology.
    Enhance science education in schools
    and communities throughout the state
    of North Carolina.
    Enhance member institutions' efforts to
    develop exhibits, programs and
scientific collections that focus on the
basic sciences and related technological applications. Serve as a vehicle for planning and conducting cooperative projects that strengthen services provided by member institutions across North Carolina. Grassroots museums annually serve millions of citizens through general visitation, teacher training and special programs. Programs include both onsite and offsite presentations, and reach students in every North Carolina school district. As a public/private alliance, for every state dollar allocated to Grassroots museums, the institutions raise twelve dollars from private support. Through Grassroots, North Carolina science centers are addressing statewide issues relating to museums, tourism, industry, and basic math/science instruction.

    79. Atomic Clocks - Online Stuff - Science Museum
Talks about how different types of atomic clocks work, and the history of their invention.
    http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/onlinestuff/stories/atomic_clocks.aspx
    Astonishing Science. Spectacular museum.
    Atomic Clocks
The first atomic clock, Caesium I, was designed by Louis Essen and built at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington in 1955. Although it was not the first machine to use atoms for timekeeping, it was the first to keep time better than the best pendulum or quartz clocks. It was also the first clock whose timekeeping was significantly more constant than the rotation of the Earth. Modern atomic clocks are even more accurate than Caesium I and time is now defined in terms of atoms rather than the Earth's motion. All mechanical clocks work by counting the vibrations of something which has a constant frequency such as a pendulum. Unfortunately, the frequency of a pendulum is not perfectly constant. It is affected by changes in temperature, air pressure and the strength of gravity. This causes the clock to run too quickly or too slowly. The frequencies measured by atomic clocks are much higher than those of a pendulum but vary much less, so atomic clocks keep time much better. Caesium I was so accurate that it would only gain or lose one second in three hundred years. Modern atomic clocks are even more accurate. It is difficult to imagine that we need to measure time so accurately but it is essential for many aspects of modern life which we take for granted. Modern navigation systems, mobile telephones, digital television and many industrial and commercial activities need this level of accuracy.
