Systemic sclerosis - scleroderma
U.-F. Haustein, MD
Dermatology Online Journal 8(1): 3
Department of Dermatology, University of Leipzig, Germany
Abstract
Systemic sclerosis is a clinically heterogeneous, systemic disorder which affects the connective tissue of the skin, internal organs and the walls of blood vessels. It is characterized by alterations of the microvasculature, disturbances of the immune system and by massive deposition of collagen and other matrix substances in the connective tissue. This review discusses epidemiology and survival, clinical features including subsets and internal organ involvement, pathophysiology and genetics, microvasculature, immunobiology, fibroblasts and connective tissue metabolism and environmental factors. Early diagnosis and individually tailored therapy help to manage this disorder, which is treatable, but not curable. Therapy involves immunomodulation as well as the targeting of blood vessel mechanics and fibrosis. Physical therapy and psychotherapy are also important adjunctive therapies in this multifactorial disease.
Introduction
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a clinically heterogeneous generalized disorder which affects the connective tissue of the skin and internal organs such as gastrointestinal tract, lungs, heart and kidneys. It is characterized by alterations of the microvasculature, disturbances of the immune system and by massive deposition of collagen. The first detailed description of a scleroderma-like disease was published by Curzio in Naples in 1753.[

    What Is Scleroderma?
Scleroderma is a medical term for a disease that causes hardening and thickening of the skin or the connective tissues (the fibers that support your skin and internal organs). There are two main types of scleroderma: localized and systemic. While localized scleroderma only affects your skin, systemic scleroderma affects not only your skin, but also your blood vessels and internal organs (such as your heart and lungs).
    Causes of Scleroderma
The exact cause of scleroderma is unknown. However, it's thought that abnormal activity in the immune system causes cells to overproduce collagen, which in turn causes connective tissue to build up. For that reason, it is known as an autoimmune disease, meaning a disease of the immune system. Certain factors may increase your scleroderma risk. These include:

    Scleroderma
Scleroderma is a widespread connective tissue disease that involves changes in the skin, blood vessels, muscles, and internal organs.
    Causes
The cause of scleroderma is unknown. People with this condition have a buildup of a substance called collagen in the skin and other organs. This buildup leads to the symptoms of the disease. The disease usually affects people 30 to 50 years old. Women get scleroderma more often than men do. Risk factors include work exposure to silica dust and polyvinyl chloride. Diffuse scleroderma can overlap with other autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus and polymyositis . In such cases, the disorder is referred to as mixed connective disease.
    Symptoms
Localized scleroderma usually affects only the skin on the hands and face. Its course is very slow, and it rarely, if ever, spreads throughout the body (becomes systemic) or causes serious complications. Systemic scleroderma is also called systemic sclerosis. This form of the disease may affect the organs of the body, large areas of the skin, or both. This form of scleroderma has two main types: limited and diffuse scleroderma.

Is it hot enough for everyone? I know in the northeast it has been plenty hot, but it can't really be too hot for me since I got sick so I'm loving it. I do understand though how endless 90 degree days can get tiring for some. Today was my 6 month checkup down at the Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Center in Baltimore. It is my first checkup since going off Cellcept, the immune system suppression drug I was on for 3 years (Jan 2007 thu Jan 2010).

The false puffballs all have a thick tough skin and are generally dark inside (the gleba) even from a young age. They are not severely poisonous, causing a somewhat unpleasant gastrointestinal upset. Fortunately most of them are small. less than 15 cm diameter. The tough skin and unpleasant flavor ensures that few people have been tempted to eat this fungus. The species shown here is probably Scleroderma citrinum , the poison pigskin puffball. You can learn a bit more about Scleroderma on the giant puffball page

      Introduction:
Scleroderma is a group of diseases that causes skin and sometimes internal organs to become hard and tight. In fact, the word scleroderma actually means "hard skin." Scleroderma occurs when the body makes too much collagen, the protein that makes up connective tissues. Localized scleroderma usually only affects the skin on the hands and face. Systemic scleroderma is more serious and affects connective tissue in many parts of your body, including internal organs. Scleroderma is considered an autoimmune disease, meaning that the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues. According to the Scleroderma Foundation, about 300,000 people in the United States have the condition. It is more common in women than men.
