Archaeology is learning about people from the past from the evidence they left behind. In practical terms, this can cover just about any part of our properties, from buried archaeology to standing buildings, from gardens and designed landscapes around castles to whole landscapes in the countryside - cultural landscapes which have formed over thousands of years of people living in and working with their natural environment. Keep up to date with some of our most recent projects and discoveries by downloading the NTS Archaeology Bulletin (click here) What we do
Our archaeologists are involved in almost every aspect of archaeology, from fieldwalking, survey and excavation, to practical conservation measures and interpreting sites for visitors. We also contribute beyond the Trust to help others care for Scotland's historic environment. We work closely with our neighbours, with universities, with government agencies like Historic Scotland, and with politicians in the Scottish Parliament.

Archaeology Programmes and Grants Advice Team, Historic Scotland Dr Noel Fojut Head of Archaeology Programmes and Grants Advice noel.fojut@scotland.gsi.gov.uk Historic Scotland generally looks to applicants for Archaeology grants to fund a significant proportion of their projects themselves, or to get part-funding from other sources. Grants can be promised for more than one financial year. However the basic cycle of grant-giving is annual. Probably the first thing to do is to discuss your proposals with an HS Inspector from the relevant Inspectorate Team. You can then ask for a grant application form to be sent or download one from the Historic Scotland website. After considering all of the applications, and the work which it wants to commission itself, Historic Scotland may send you a formal grant offer. Those receiving a grant offer will need to formally accept the conditions attached to it. Historic Scotland often pays instalments of the grant as work gets done, up to 90% of the total. Before the delivery date specified in the grant offer, copies of any reports identified in the grant offer and accounts of your expenditure must be sent to Historic Scotland, which then pays the residue of the grant.

In the Medieval period, the Province of Strathnaver stretched from the border with Caithness on the east to Cape Wrath and Assynt on the west. Northern Sutherland has some of the richest archaeology in Scotland. The Strathnaver Province Archaeology Project is investigating the archaeology of Viking, Norse and Medieval settlement in the old Province of Strathnaver, through a combination of excavation, survey and documentary research. West of Scotland Sites and Monuments Record
The West of Scotland SMR
The West of Scotland Archaeology Service (WoSAS) maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for eleven Councils in Argyll, the Clyde valley and Ayrshire. The SMR covers an area of around 13,000 square kilometers, including some of the most fascinating prehistoric landscapes in Britain, including Upper Clydesdale, the Kilmartin Valley, and Machrie Moor. With over 20,000 records at present, the SMR aims to be a comrehensive and up-to-date record of archaeological monuments, fieldwork and finds for this area. As well as providing curatorial advice for development control and monument management purposes, WoSAS is keen to promote public access and enjoyment of the archaeology of the West of Scotland, and welcomes enquiries from members of the public and archaeological researchers. If you are carrying out research or fieldwork in our area, we would be pleased to provide information and assistance where possible, and in turn to receive any results into the SMR. The information supplied to the Archaeology Data Service is a subset derived from the SMR, downloaded on 1st December 1998. It comprises:
