At the end of the 17th century, dancing came into the open in Edinburgh as an upperclass recreation. By the 1770s it had become a major national pastime. The Country-dances

Scottish Country Dance
In the dance, an art so intimately bound up with music, the French convention found ample expression. We have already seen in the old Cockelbie's Sow (15th cent.) how, among the old Scottish dance tunes, there peeps out such strangers as the Orliance Naverne (Navernais), and in a work entitled The Boke Named the Governour (1546), the writer, enumerating the older English dances says, "In stede of these we have nowe Base daunces bargenettes pavyons turgions ," whose very labels bespeak their origin, just as do the Scottish paspay (passepied), sincopas (cinq pas), brawl (branle), and galyert (gaillarde). One recalls how the country folk in Christis Kirk on the Grene , throw aside the old tunes and cry to the minstrel to "blaw up a brawl of France." The craze for these tersichorean fancies lasted well beyond the end of this period, and so it is quite clear that in both the lighter forms of music and in the dance, Scotland owed a great deal to France. In the very nature of things, the debt could not be repaid in like for like, although Scotland did furnish Charles VII (1422-61) of France with a court minstrel in John Fary, and Henry IV (1589-1610) with two favourite lutars in James and Charles Hedington, whilst we learn from Tabouret's (1589) that the branles d'Escosse were "the rage" of the day, and they already had a place in the

We offer classes from Basic through Advanced levels and we also have monthly socials, workshops, and special events.   Contact us at VISCDS@shaw.ca  or 250-598-0207 What is Scottish Country Dancing? Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) is a sociable dance form with roots stretching back for centuries. Participants are grouped into sets, typically of 3, 4, or 5 couples arranged either in two lines (men facing ladies) or in a square, and work together to dance a series of formations. This will leave them in a new order, and the dance is repeated enough times to bring them back to their starting positions, with everyone dancing each position in turn. SCD is mainly danced socially, for the pure pleasure and enjoyment, but many groups also perform. Although the basic steps and formations are easy to pick up, the technique is being honed continuously and at its highest level is performed as an extremely athletic and graceful dance form. New dances are being written all the time and dances vary considerably in complexity and ease of dancing – thus careful selection of dances for a program can cater for beginners with a couple of months experience, or challenge and interest the most experienced dancers, or (as more usually happens) provide a range over the evening to suit most tastes.

A Comprehensive Scottish Country Dancing Dictionary
Scottish Dance Instruction Pages And Technical Terms Explained - By Reuben Freemantle
This website is intended as a reference to the formal terms used in describing and teaching the traditional dancing of Scotland. How to use this Scottish Country Dancing website Select Comprehensive DICTIONARY Of Dance Terms (on the side navigation bar on every page) and then select from the alphabetical list of links. This is the simplest way to find the explanation of a Scottish Country Dancing term. You may then discover that the definition refers to a closely associated term. If so, follow the link at the bottom of the page to find the associated page. For example, when you have found the description of Strathspey half poussette , it refers to Strathspey poussette at the same logical level and to the logically higher levels Poussette movements and Complex figures Alternatively, if you know that the term is related to one of the main links on the side navigation bar, choose that link. Then, sometimes via an intermediate link, find the exact term you seek. For example, if you seek Corner positions , go to Set structure . Then, via the link at the bottom of the page, to

during the week preceding the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games
Although Thistledoon has again faded into the mists, we are fortunate that we only need to wait a year for it to reappear. Next year promises to be as joyful and fulfilling as previous years. An exciting bit of news is that the newly renovated old gym will be available for our classes and for the Gala. Most dancers have loved the floor at the old gym, but found the rest of the facility to be lacking in many respects. After receiving extensive renovations including a new roof, the building is now open with new offices, a fitness center and a cafe, as well as the renovated gym floor.
The Thistle School of Scottish Country Dance provides instruction in the correct techniques and manner of Scottish Country Dancing, the historic and contemporary social dancing of Scotland. Teachers at the school are certificated by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) For More Thistle School Information: Check Richard Walker's Thistle School web site for this year.

Here are some of the things that our members enjoy about Scottish Country Dancing:
    • Scottish Country Dancing is fitness with a tradition. I could join without a partner!
    • Really nice people, talented and well informed instructors and lots of fun. Great roots music, plenty of feasts and dance parties, and men who actually want to dance! Something a bit different, something active and enjoyable that allows me to explore my interest in Scotland in a new way. My Mum's side was all Scottish, and I was curious - and a bit surprised really that this "cultural" thing had existed for so long and I didn't know about it I wanted to join a social dance group that gave a variety of dancing, would evoke memories of dancing growing up, and maybe spin off some friendships. I took up Scottish Country dancing to get some exercise. Then I actually started enjoying the classes, the music, the dancing, the discipline of the formal steps and the great fellowship and friendly atmosphere. (I also get my exercise!)
