Scottish Country Dancing
The dance form is called "Scottish," and on special occasions many dancers wear their clan's tartan in kilts or sashes, but there is no requirement to be a "MacAnything." Scottish heritage is not needed to join this group of enthusiastic and friendly people.
Dances are done to the traditional music of jigs, reels and strathspeys. The dancing pace, especially for jigs and reels, provides a good aerobic workout. The complex dancing patterns result in an equally good mental workout. And Scottish Country Dancing is also an ideal form of stress management: you can't think about anything else while dancing! The formations are done in sets of six or eight people, so the activity is also a social and cooperative one. And you don't need a partner to join.
Branch Description
The KW Branch has been active since 1960. Currently it has 60 members, ranging from young adults to seniors.

Victoria, BC New to Scottish Country Dancing? Come and watch the dancing or join our Basic Class. We offer classes from Basic through Advanced levels and we also have monthly socials, workshops, and special events.   Contact us at VISCDS@shaw.ca  or 250-598-0207 What is Scottish Country Dancing? Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) is a sociable dance form with roots stretching back for centuries. Participants are grouped into sets, typically of 3, 4, or 5 couples arranged either in two lines (men facing ladies) or in a square, and work together to dance a series of formations. This will leave them in a new order, and the dance is repeated enough times to bring them back to their starting positions, with everyone dancing each position in turn. SCD is mainly danced socially, for the pure pleasure and enjoyment, but many groups also perform. Although the basic steps and formations are easy to pick up, the technique is being honed continuously and at its highest level is performed as an extremely athletic and graceful dance form. New dances are being written all the time and dances vary considerably in complexity and ease of dancing – thus careful selection of dances for a program can cater for beginners with a couple of months experience, or challenge and interest the most experienced dancers, or (as more usually happens) provide a range over the evening to suit most tastes.

Scottish Country Dancing Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland (and one of its best kept secrets). It's not the sword dance and fling as performed by the Highland dancers. Rather it is a social dance whose winding patterns are reminiscent of interlacing Celtic knotwork, and whose circle, lines and square formations came from the Lowlands and other parts of Britain. From Scotland's 400-year alliance with France came the elegance of the French court dance, and from the vitality of a mountain people came the lively movement and lightness of foot. Like Scotland's unique musical heritage, Scottish Country Dancing reflects the country's rich cultural heritage. An opportunity to dance or observe is provided on Saturday and Sunday at MacRae Meadows at the Country Dancing platform, located just outside the main gate. Scottish Country Dance Gala Plan to come on Friday night to the Scottish Country Dance Gala in Williams Gymnasium at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elkfrom the grand march to the colorful evening wear to the flying kilts it is spectacle you won't want to miss. 8:00 pm until 12:00 am.

Scottish Country Dance Scottish Country Dance If you would like to comment, contribute, sponsor or advertise on this page please in the first instance contact us via the following address: Back to top Scottish Country Dance is a unique blend of music, disciplined dancing, intricate floor patterns and sociability that has appeal throughout the world. The origins of dancing in Scotland are obscure with no mention in early documents until around the 16th century of Mary Queen of Scots when her reputation as an excellent dancer apparently added to her charming the French court. With one European court frequently influencing the other it meant that new ideas of style and content were adopted and possible that she helped introduce it on her return to Scotland. In the Elizabethan court of England rustic figure dances called 'country dances' were popular and these were often set to Celtic tunes. By the late 16th century new European ideas changed many emblems of Scottish society including music which changed from harp to pipes. It is at this time that the word reel first appears and in the following century Ports, possibly the forerunner of slow Strathspeys are also recorded. The Hebridean singing of a 'port-a-bail' (mouth tune) was mentioned in the 12th century and traditionally thought to be accompanied by dancing but generally in Scotland, as in Europe, by the 17th century dancing was popular. With the introduction of the viol, the fiddles forerunner, it set the scene for the emergence of the fiddle and dancing to become a new vogue for social interaction.

Scottish Country Dance History
The history of Scottish country dancing goes back at least three centuries. The intervening years have seen it flourish and decline, until it was rediscovered in the 1920s under the auspices of the (then) Scottish Country Dance Society chaired by Jean Milligan and Ysobel Stewart of Fasnacloich, and started to mushroom into its current, internationally popular form. Here are some documents about the history of Scottish country dancing:
  • A selected bibliography on the history of SCD (by Marjorie McLaughlin) A transcription of the 1749 Menzies Manuscript containing a number of country dance descriptions (contributed by Jim Healy) »Facsimile« reproductions of two works by Thomas Wilson (courtesy of the US Library of Congress
    • The Complete System of English Country Dancing (1815). This claims to include »all the figures ever used in English country dancing« as well as »scientific instructions for the composing of country dances«. 370 pages. This is a huge file (9 MB, PDF).
