Wimbledon Reels is a group of friendly dancing enthusiasts who meet on Tuesday each week in Wimbledon in south-west London to dance Scottish country dances - reels, jigs and strathspeys.  We are committed to the idea that Scottish country dancing should be fun, and we have an experienced team of MCs who walk through and call all our dances so that everyone can join in. We limit ourselves to a small range of dances, which most of our regulars know well and new members can learn very quickly.  We do about 10 dances in an evening, each one followed by a short interval to relax, socialise and enjoy a glass of wine or a soft drink.  At the end of the evening, a happy, if perspiring, crowd makes its way to the pub to continue socialising!! We meet every  Tuesday   from 7.30 to 10.00pm at Trinity Church Hall, Mansel Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 4AA.  See below for a map and directions.

[Overview] [Calendar] [Teachers] [Musicians] ... [Links] The 2010-11 class brochure What is Scottish Country Dance?
Asilomar Ball in Merrill Hall
Scottish country dancing is the Traditional Ballroom Dance of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, based in Edinburgh, was founded to preserve this joyful social dance tradition. And, it's not just for Scots ... today people enjoy Scottish Country Dancing all over the world. Unlike Highland dances, which are usually solos to bagpipe music, we dance in sets of two to five couples. Everyone changes partners for each dance, so there's no need to bring a partner! The San Francisco Bay area is home to many fine musicians . The dances vary in tempo: lively and fast paced or slow and elegant:
  • Jigs (quick time)
  • Reels (quick time)
  • Strathspeys (slow and lovely)
Fiddles and piano, along with recorders, bass, drums, and accordians are typical. Like other Celtic music, Scottish music is highly emotional - both the lively quicktime tunes and the hidden power of a strathspey will make your heartstrings thrum!

CLASSES CONTACTS DANCES ... PHOTOS Wallace Monument, Stirling
Welcome This site will shortly be moving home. During this time the site may temporarily disappear but will be back at the same address as soon as possible. The classes have now resumed. Please note we have a new venue for the Thursday night Beginners and General classes this year. Due to ever increasing condtions imposed by Stirling Council the use of St Ninian's Primary School became impractial therefore the Thursday classes will now take place in Beaconhurst School, Bridge of Allan.
For full information on the Classes and instructions of how to get all our venues are available on the Maps page. We hope to welcome new and old members there.
The Events page has been updated with the new season's dates and dance programmes. The Sunday night sessions with June Templeman in Victoria Hall, Dunblane, have started again. The next will take place on Sunday 31st October at 7.00 pm. June teaches some of the more challenging, though not necessarily difficult dances. All welcome. Full details of all these events can be found on the Events page.
Tickets are now available for the Christmas Dance on 17th December in The Albert Halls with Colin Dewar's Band.
