SECTION B
Recreational Scuba Diving: An Overview
WHAT DOES 'SCUBA' STAND FOR? Scuba is an acronym for 'self-contained underwater breathing apparatus'. There are several ways one can go under water (breath-hold, helmet diving, submarine, etc.). "Diving with scuba" signifies using apparatus that is completely carried by the diver and not connected to the surface, hence self-contained. HOW POPULAR IS SCUBA DIVING? An estimated 2.5-3.5 million Americans participate in recreational scuba diving. Another 500 thousand become certified each year in the United States. In the early days of scuba diving (roughly 1950-1970), participants were predominately young men. Today the sport is enjoyed by people in all age groups and both sexes. And why not? Just about any teenager or adult who enjoys the water and can swim, and who does not have heart or lung impairment, can learn to scuba dive. It does not take great physical strength or unusual exercise tolerance. All it takes is the desire, plus some basic classroom and in-water training. Scuba originally began with military and commercial applications, where it is still employed. However, by far its widest use, in terms of number of participants, is recreational. Recreational scuba today is like other any other sport that requires specialized equipment and training, such as snow skiing, sailing, mountain climbing and horseback riding. This section will provide an overview of recreational scuba diving, and explain how it differs from other forms of diving with scuba equipment.

It's official: Women are better scuba divers than men
Powered by CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network
by DAVID HARRISON UK (29 Oct 2007) For years women drivers have endured jokes about map reading and reversing from men who pride themselves on their superior spatial awareness. Underwater, though, the boot – or flipper – is on the other foot. For women divers are much more aware of their surroundings than men, according to a two-year study of scuba divers. "Women have better orientation," said Mandy Shackleton, a marine scientist at Hull University's marine sciences centre. "They have a greater awareness of what is going on around them." Women were found to be calmer, less aggressive and more safety conscious than their "gung-ho, sensation-seeking" male counterparts. Men took risks and were prone to showing off. The men experienced "a chain reaction of hormones" that caused them to lose their "buoyancy control" more easily than women. The stress hormone cortisol is released first, followed by testosterone – the hormone linked with aggression – and finally, adrenaline. "The combination of these three results in erratic, dangerous diving," said Ms Shackleton. On an ecological level, men's "spatially unaware" behaviour is damaging the world's coral reefs. There is growing concern about the future of the reefs, which are vital habitats for thousands of fish species.

Scuba diving
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Not to be confused with Self-contained breathing apparatus , which describes breathing sets used out of water. Scuba diver with air tank Scuba diving ("scuba" originally being an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus , now widely considered a word in its own right) is a form of underwater diving in which a diver uses a scuba set to breathe underwater for recreation, commercial or industrial reasons. Unlike early diving, which relied exclusively on air pumped from the surface , scuba divers carry their own source of breathing gas (usually compressed air allowing them greater freedom than with an air line . Both surface supplied and scuba diving allow divers to stay underwater significantly longer than with breath-holding techniques as used in snorkelling and free-diving According to the purpose of the dive, a diver usually moves underwater by swimfins attached to the feet, but external propulsion can come from an underwater vehicle , or a sled pulled from the surface.
