Long ago, people thought they were either insects or shellfish. Actually, a seahorse is quite a normal fish and there are about 35 different species of seahorses spread all over the world. Seahorses belong to the family of Syngnathidae. This word is a combination of two Greek words, Syn- meaning fused and Gnathus- which means jaws. Hippcampus is the genus that they belong to. Hippos mean horse and campus means sea-monster in Greek. What do they look like? Seahorses don't have scales but armoured plates all over their body instead. They come in a variation of colours, orange, red, yellow, green, brown and even grey in one of the two patterns: zebra stripes and spots. Some species that live around sea mosses can even grow feather-like appendages that resemble pieces of moss and sea weed as camouflage. Boy or girl?

Seahorse All seahorses belong to the genus Hippocampus in the family Syngnathidae. They share the genus Hippocampus with their close relatives the pipefishes. Both seahorses and pipefishes are popular in marine aquariums. The members of the family Syngnathidae all share a common habit; the females will deposit their eggs in a brood pouch on the chest of their male partner. The male will fertilize the eggs inside his pouch and then carry them around and care for them until they hatch.  Seahorses might not look like traditional fishes, but they are true fishes of the class Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes). Sea horses inhabit both tropical and temperate waters and are found in many different parts of the world. There are over 30 described species of seahorse and many of them have been successfully kept by saltwater aquarists. A few examples of commonly kept species are Dwarf seahorse( Hippocampus zosterae ), Longsnout seahorse( Hippocampus reidi ), Spotted seahorse( Hippocampus kuda ) and Tiger tail seahorse( Hippocampus comes A lot sea horse species are endangered or in the risk of becoming endangered in the near future, and it is therefore important to research the species you are interested in. The situation regarding which species that are legal to purchase and which species that are prohibited can change fast and it is always important to seek out current information instead of relaying on old recommendations.

Their food passes into their digestive systems very quickly because they don’t have a stomach and teeth. Seahorses digest their food fast that they need to constantly eat to live. A seahorse that is two weeks old can eat 3000 to 4000 tiny shrimp in a single day. Mating and Reproduction Mating does not only occur between seahorses of the same species but also between different species. It is said seahorses utter musical sounds while mating under a full moon. And that they have a single mate for life. Every morning, they come together, dance, change their colour, twirl around with linked tails and then separate for the rest of the day. Where do baby seahorses come from? The female seahorse produces eggs but they are held inside the male's body until they hatch. The sea horse is the only animal in the entire animal kingdom in which the father is pregnant. Within two or three weeks between 50 and 1.500 ponies develop inside the male’s pouch, which are living born. Often not all of the babies are born at once but in several phases over some minutes or hours; in extreme cases it takes even one or two days. Some males die a few days after birth of the ponies because of remaining dead babies in the pouch that cause decay and bacterial infection.
