Being not as popular and well known as whales, in Mazatlan during the winter time you can enjoy the visit of the California Sea Lions to town. Want to watch the sea lions?
According to the 1991 decree is strictly forbidden at all time to hunt, capture, chase, molest or According to the in any ways the birds and other animals that inhabit temporary or permanently Mazatlan islands. It is also expressly forbidden the destruction or modification of the local flora. It is not allowed any kind of construction for any purpose. These coastal mammals, known as Zahphus californianus or california sea lions, are locally abundant along the coasts of California and Baja California, but can be found as far south as Mazatlan along the western coast of Mexico, and as far north as the coasts of British Columbia. Typical colouring ranges from tan to chocolate brown and may appear black when wet. The head has a pointed muzzle and the profile resembles that of a dog. The hair is short; the flippers are long and leathery with nails. An adult male is larger weighing about 800 pounds with a sagittal crest or bump on the top of the head; the female who is considerably smaller, averages 250 pounds. The top of a male's head often gets lighter with age. These members of the otariid or walking seal family have external ear flaps and large flippers that they use to "walk" on land. The trained "seals" in zoos and aquariums are usually California sea lions.

and status of the Steller Sea Lion....... Seal Conservation Society
http://www.pinnipeds.org/species/steller.htm
Steller Sea Lion
(Eumetopias jubatus) Distribution and Numbers
Steller sea lions, also known as Northern sea lions, are the largest of the Otariidae (eared seals) and are distributed around the rim of the North Pacific Ocean from California to northern Japan. It was estimated in 2000 that the total range-wide number of Steller sea lions was roughly about 85,000, down from an estimated 240-300,000 in 1960. The world-wide population is generally divided into two stocks, based largely on genetic evidence, namely the "western population" (Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Russia and small numbers in Japan) and the "eastern population" (California, Oregon, British Columbia and Southeast Alaska). Individuals have been known to wander as far south as the Bohai and Huanghai Seas in China.
Status
Although the eastern population has remained stable at an estimated 39,000 for the last few years, the western population of Steller sea lions has been declining rapidly in recent years, from an estimated total of 227,000 in 1960 to one of 45-46,000 in 2000. In 1997 the U.S. population of the Steller sea lion west of 144ºW (Cape Suckling, Alaska) was reclassified as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act, the remainder of the population remaining classified as

Australian Sea Lion
(Neophoca cinerea) Distribution and Numbers
Found only in Australia and one of the most endangered pinnipeds in the world, there are estimated to be 10,000-12,000 Australian sea lions between The Pages Islands in South Australia and Houtman Abrolhos off the Western Australian coast. The species mostly inhabits islands but also a few mainland sites, the principal breeding colonies being located at Kangaroo Island and Dangerous Reef in South Australia. Wandering individuals have been sighted as far as New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Shark Bay in Western Australia. The Australian sea lion is the most widely distributed and the least abundant pinniped in Australia.

CSIRO Wildlife and Ecology Status
The species was heavily hunted for its hide and oil in the 18th and 19th centuries before which its range extended as far as the islands in Bass Strait. The Australian sea lion is now listed as Rare under South Australian legislation where it has received full legal protection since 1964 and has Special Protected Species status in Western Australia where it has been legally protected since 1892. The species has also been protected under national Australian legislation since 1975. Some small colonies in South Australia are protected by the Great Australian Bight Marine Park which was created in 1996 by the South Australian government and added to in 1998 by the national government.

South American Sea Lion
(Otaria flavescens) Distribution and Numbers
Also known as the Southern sea lion, and referred to by some scientists as Otaria byronia , the South American sea lion is found along the coasts and off-shore islands of South America. The limits of its range are Zorritos in northern Peru and Ilha dos Lobos in southern Brazil, although wandering individuals have been found as far north as Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands. Population figures for the species are incomplete. However the overall population is estimated to be about 265,000, consisting of roughly 30,000 in Peru, 128,500 in Chile, 90,000 in Argentina, 12,000 - 15,000 in Uruguay, 3,000 in the Falkland Islands, and a few hundred in Brazil. The populations in Uruguay and the Falkland Islands are decreasing rapidly while in most of Argentina and Chile they are increasing at an annual rate of around 3%. The species has no breeding colonies in Brazil, the small number of individuals found there having originated from the Uruguayan and Argentinean colonies to the south.

The Steller sea lion is the largest member of the Otariidae (eared seal) family. Steller's sea lions inhabit the cooler waters of the North Pacific. They are divided into two stocks - the western population (Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Russia and Japan), and the eastern population (California, British Columbia and south east Alaska). This species gets its name from a German naturalist named George Wilhelm Steller who was the first to study the animal in 1742. Steller's sea lions are suffering massive, inexplicable population losses and are listed as endangered.

They may look very much alike, but are seals and sea lions related? What are the differences? Seals and sea lions both belong to the scientific order Pinnipedia. The name literally means “fin-footed.†There are 33 living species of pinnipeds. They are all warm-blooded mammals that have a streamlined torpedo body, enabling them to swim and dive gracefully. Both seals and sea lions have flippers that act as rudders, helping them to steer in the water. However, although they are very suited to the marine environment, pinnipeds spend part of their life in the water and part on land, which sets them apart from the other marine mammals (whales). They live a nomadic lifestyle, spending months out at sea and then returning to land to rest. Scientists have divided the pinnipeds into three families: earless seals (Phocidae), eared seals (Otariidae), and walruses (Odobenidae). The earless seals are the phocids. They are what you would think of as a seal. They are called earless because they lack ear flaps. However, this does not mean they are deaf. Seals have tiny openings, which are called pinnae, that serve as ears. There are eighteen species of seals.
