We conduct research projects, seal pup rehabilitation and seal population monitoring, and also carry out work on the biology of seals (and occasionally other mammals, such as otters) on a consulting basis. We cooperate with other academic and conservation organisations in the UK and elsewhere. At present we are working with British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) to effect a change in the law to protect seals in Great Britain. We are engaged with the University of Leeds in Caspian seal conservation biology and are currently coordiinating a Darwin Initiative (DEFRA - UK govenment) project 'to identify and eliminate threats to the Caspian Seal', and also coordinating the Caspian International Seal Survey (CISS). GALAPAGOS SEA LIONS AND FUR SEALS
Sea lions and fur seals are fin-footed mammals with amazing abilities in water. Their speed and agility in water contrasts to their clumsy waddling on land. Their agility in the water makes it possible for them to maneuver safely in pounding surf and along jagged rocks. These warm-blooded mammals have adapted over the years to life in the water. Millions of years ago their ancestors were land creatures who hunted the coastline for food. Their adaptation, unlike other marine mammals much as whales and dolphins, did not make either sea lions or fur seals completely independent of the land as they spend a portion of their life lazing along the coast. With their adaptation and graceful ability in water it seems incredible that baby fur seals need to learn to swim. Fur seals are born on land and are taught to swim by their mothers. The young pup is picked up by the back of the neck and is carried into the water by its mother. At first the pup struggles against the surf, but by the time it is a few months old it easily breaks through the surf without problem.
    GALAPAGOS SEA LIONS
The 'unofficial welcoming committee' of the Galapagos Islands is the sea lion. Their playful inquisitive nature, speed, agility on land, and bark quickly make them an island favorite. Sea lions live in large colonies. Adult males known as bulls are the head of the colony. Bulls grow to be up to 7 ft (2 m) in length and 800 lbs (363 kg). As males grow larger they fight to win dominance and for a territory including a harem of between 5 and 25 cows. Dominant bulls will fight off any intruders entering the territory.

    Steller Cove: An Introduction

Sea Lions get their Teeth Brushed
scientific name Eumetopias jubatus size One of the largest of the pinniped family, male Steller sea lions can weigh up to 3,000 pounds, and females up to 770 pounds. Males are 10 to 12 feet long (they can be larger than a bear) and females average around 9 feet in length. Females are usually about one-third the size of males. characteristics The coloration of male and female sea lions tends to differ. Males are brown above, reddish brown below, with dark brown flippers, necks and forequarters. Females are uniformly brown. Sea lions are mostly cylindrical in shape and males have massive necks and forequarters. behavior Steller sea lions spend much of their time on rocky shores, but will stay in water during bad weather and may dive when they are approached or feel threatened. They are opportunistic feeders and hunt10 to 15 miles from shore. Sea lions have also been known to occasionally swim up rivers, even working their way up fish ladders at the Bonneville Dam. reproduction/life span Males maintain large harems of females after they reach social maturity at 5 to 7 years (and are able to defend a territory). Breeding season occurs from May through June in Oregon. Gestation takes about 9 months after which female sea lions give birth to one pup. Pups weigh around 50 pounds and are nearly 4 feet long at birth. Pups are born dark brown but in 4 to 6 months they shed to a lighter brown. Females give birth about every 1 to 2 years after reaching sexual maturity at 4 to 5 years. Males reach sexual maturity at 5 to 7 years. Steller sea lions live for approximately 20 years.

MONTEREY BAY PINNIPEDS and OTTER Barking California Sea Lions are a constant in fall and winter in Monterey, and I hear them from my backyard hot tub when conditions are right. Harbor seals are common attractions along the rocky shore and in Elkhorn Slough. The other pinnipeds, though, require either trips to breeding colonies just north or south of Monterey County (Northern Elephant Seal and Steller's Sea Lion) or luck on offshore boat trips. I've never seen a Northern Fur Seal from shore. Short photo introductions to the various species follow.
All photos are from Monterey Bay or nearby Sea Otter Enhydra lutris nearly went extinct due to hunting for their fur in former centuries, but today they are a star attraction along the shores of Monterey Bay. They are easily seen in Elkhorn Slough, around the Monterey Peninsula, and down the Big Sur coast. They are popular attractions at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Local populations have been studied intensively, and much information is available on line. There is a local Sea Otter society with a gift shop on Cannery Row. Photo above California Sea Lion Zalophus californianus is a common visitor in fall and winter from Channel Island breeding populations, and in some years a few remain through spring and summer. Sea lions are easily identified by their external ears (seals show no ears) and by their raucous barking. When present, they commandeer unused boats in the harbor, buoys, and the Coast Guard jetty. They can be very aggressive off Fisherman's Wharf. Our visiting population is almost entirely composed of males; females don't venture this far north.
