Sea Lions
By Keegan
Did you know sea lions are mammals? They are part of a group called Pinnipeds , or fin footed marine mammals. There are three groups of pinnipeds. One group includes sea lions and seals that have ears. The next group includes the seals that are earless. The last group is made up of walruses. Scientists believe that seals descended from terrestrial, or earth animals like otters. They think that sea lions descended from bear-like animals. Eared pinnipeds (sea lions) are also known as “eared seals.” Confused yet? The most well known of the sea lions are probably the California sea lions. The ears of a sea lion are not what you may expect. They look like holes in the animal’s head. They are probably that way so they do not slow the sea lion down when it is swimming. The rest of the sea lion’s body is very smooth and streamlined to allow the animal to swim quickly and easily. Animal Communication Sea lions communicate using sound. When sea lions give birth to a pup, they

The Striated Caracara ( Phalcoboenus australis occurs rarely in the Tierra del Fuego area of extreme southern South America, but the main range of the species is the Falkland Islands. The species is also called Forster's Caracara by some authors and on the Falklands it is simply referred to as "Johnny Rook". The photos here were shot on Sea Lion Island in the Falklands in January 1999 with a Canon EOS 1N & EF 70-200 F2.8L lens with fill flash. The film was Fuji Sensia 100. The bird(s) pictured here were on the edge of a cliff on the north side of the island. The pair of birds had a nest about 10 feet below this spot.

All California sea lions are brownish in color but the females tend to be a light golden brown. Males may get as large as 1,000 lbs and seven feet in length while females grow to 220 lbs and only six feet in length. They have a dog like face and as the males age the top of their head often grows lighter. Where can I find a sea lion California sea lions are can be found all over the western coast of the United States ranging as far south as the southern tip of the Baja peninsula in Mexico to as far north as Vancouver Island and British Columbia. Another population of California sea lions in the Sea of Japan became extinct. No one knows why but the most probable hypothesis is that they were killed off during World War II. If you are looking to see a sea lion you probably won’t have to go as far as the coast because most of the trained “seals” in zoos are California sea lions. Seals VS. Sea Lions

All pinnipeds must come ashore to breed, give birth, and nurse their young. Seals, sea lions, and walruses are taxonomically related to other carnivores, including bears, dogs, raccoons, and weasels (including otters). Three families of living pinnipeds are recognized:
  • Phocidae (earless seals or true seals) Otaridae (eared or fur seals and sea lions) Odobenidae (walrus)
  • Status of Pinniped Species All pinnipeds are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) ; some may be designated as "depleted"

    Australian Sea-lion Neophoca cinerea Found only in Australia and one of the most endangered pinnipeds in the world, there are estimated to be 10,000-12,000 Australian Sea-lions between The Pages Islands in South Australia and Houtman Abrolhos off the Western Australian coast. The species mostly inhabits islands but also a few mainland sites, the principal breeding colonies being located at Kangaroo Island and Dangerous Reef in South Australia. This genus of Australian Sea-lion has one species. The male is blackish to chocolate brown with a prominent white mane, the female is slivery-grey. These photographs were taken on Kangaroo Island (SA coast). The snout is blunter than in fur-seals. The species was heavily hunted for its hide and oil in the 18th and 19th centuries before which its range extended as far as the islands in Bass Strait. The Australian sea lion is now listed as Rare under South Australian legislation where it has received full legal protection since 1964 and has Special Protected Species status in Western Australia where it has been legally protected since 1892.

    15. Marine Mammals
    Marine Mammals fall into 3 orders:
  • Order Cetacea - whales, porpoises, dolphins;
  • Order Pinnipedia - seals, sea-lions, walruses;
  • Order Cetacea
    The entire lifecycle is aquatic. There are two sub-orders based on their feeding mechanism - Mysticeti and Odonticeti
    Sub-order Mysticeti
    Baleen whales - including the largest animals - Blue Whales. They use brush-like triangular plates (baleen) which hang from roof of mouth - maybe 480 plates on each side of jaw - continuously renewed. The plates filter out zooplankton, small fish or squid and the tongue moves this food into the throat.
    • Right whales are skim feeders;
    • Minke whales are lunge and gulp feeders;
    • Grey whales suction feed on benthic animals.
    These whales have mechanisms to increase feeding success. Fin Whales scare their prey into schools while Humpback whales use a bubble-net to amass their prey
    Sub-order Odonticeti
    Toothed whales, porpoises, dolphins. First teeth are retained throughout life - grasp and swallow whole prey. Opportunistic feeders - fish, squid, crustaceans. Killer whales eat warm-blooded prey - cetaceans, seals, penguins. Improve feeding by co-operative hunting. Killer whales will surf onto a beach to capture seals, or tip up ice flows to disturb prey.
    Habitats and distribution
    River and coastal sp. have small home ranges while offshore sp. forage widely and have broad home ranges. Some live in warm equatorial waters, others are found in all oceans eg Killer Whale and Bottle-nosed Dolphins. Large baleen whales migrate from winter breeding in tropics (no feeding) to summer feeding at high latitudes (40% wt gain in 4-5mths). Odontocetes seasonal response is movement on-off shore

    Sea Lions Just as the skipper promised we have come across some Sea Lions. As the boat fights the racing tide we inch closer to the Sea Lions for some fantastic photo opportunities. Great photo of a Steller Sea Lion. Don't believe that it is bigger than a California Sea Lion? ...lets see if the telephoto can do any better! There are two types of Sea Lions that are quite prevalent in the southern Vancouver Island area. The California, and the Steller. How can you tell the difference? Well, that is actually quite simple. The Steller is the largest of the Sea Lions, it can weigh upwards of 450kg (1000lb) and can be "the size of a large black bear, with the strength and teeth to match." Stellers tend to be a tan color whereas the California Sea Lion is a more chocolate-brown. The most pronounced feature that separates them is the high forehead of the California, which can't be mistaken. After it appeared that everyone had taken all of the photos that they wanted of the enigmatic Sea Lions, the skipper started the boat once more and headed to the last known position of the Gray Whales. As the boat grudgingly ripped through the racing tide the skipper spoke over the roar of the engines, "I just spotted a Gray Whale about 1 nautical mile off our bow, looks like your lucky day!" Between lecturing for the university and taking classes, in 1998 I received my M.S. in Statistics (interdisciplinary with mathematics). Areas of special interest were Bayesian hierarchical modeling, smoothing techniques, and categorical data analysis. My original interest in statistics was sparked by a desire to apply mathematical skills to fisheries and wildlife research. In fall of 1999, my family and I left Alaska for Seattle so that my wife could pursue her Ph.D. in Chemistry. Initially I worked in HIV/AIDS Research with a little bit of wildlife consulting on the side, but have recently managed to get back into fisheries and wildlife research full time.
