Greetings from
the Alaska Sea Otter and Steller Sea Lion Commission! The Alaska Sea Otter Commission, a tribal consortium, was established in 1988 to promote Alaska Native involvement in policy decisions pertaining to sea otters. In 1998, at the request of member tribes, the Alaska Sea Otter Commission added Steller sea lions to its mission and goals, formally expanding to The Alaska Sea Otter and Steller Sea Lion Commission (TASSC). Throughout the past twenty-one years, TASSC has worked with coastal Alaska Native peoples and communities to further conservation, local management and local research for marine mammals. TASSC would like to thank all those individuals, tribes and organizations that have participated in TASSC's programs over the years. Your past and continued participation has been the success of these programs and truly the success of the organization. We thank you. Additionally we would also like to thank our funding agencies. Through their support and vision, our programs are able to continue. We thank you.

Sea Lions If you hear one before you see it, you’ll understand how sea lions got their name. These mountainous marine mammals — 8-foot, 1,000-pound males and 6-foot, 250-pound females — can emit thundering roars. Even newborns are noisy, vocalizing with their moms right away. These precocial pups are born with their eyes and their mouths open.
California sea lions ( Zalophus californianus ) also bark, growl and squeal. In the mid-1800s, large assemblages along the beaches and rocky shores of the Pacific Coast could be heard by people on ships far out to sea.
Sea lions spend a lot of time on land. With their large front flippers, they can run faster than a human. But mostly they haul out and bask, and the males stake out and noisily defend territories during the mating season. The most coveted territories are right on the shore so the animals have access to cooling water on hot days. (But sea lions seldom drink — they get most of their water from their food.) The Abbott Oceanarium offers deluxe accommodations for its resident sea lions. The newly remodeled habitat is two-and-a-half times larger than the original, with a deeper pool. For the sea lions’ fans, there’s a viewing window along the haul-out area, and the habitat has a sturdy mesh front so that you can get close enough to the sea lions to breathe the same air as they do.

Welcome to the Morro Bay Aquarium located
at 595 Embarcadero Morro Bay, CA 93442 The Morro Bay Aquarium was built in 1960 and is family-owned by Dean and Bertha Tyler. The Morro Bay Aquarium became a rehabilitation center for distressed mammals in 1984 and is a non-profit organization. It features three sea lions and a harbor seal that are housed here and were brought in because of their injuries or abandonment. Feeding the sea lions is fun for both children and adults. The aquarium is also a member of I.M.A.T.A (International Marine Animals Training Association) . I.M.A.T.A. meets annually and shares the latest research and development in mammal handling. Dean and Bertha Tyler were the first to raise an orphaned sea otter to adulthood. The otter, named Berdie, lived at the aquarium for ten years. The techniques the Tylers used to help Berdie have been shared and used to help many otters. Fourteen tanks line the inside of the building, allowing you to view local marine life such as fish, sharks, octopus, eels, abalone sea anemones and more. In addition, the research department at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo boards their horseshoe crabs here.
