Note:
This web site section is not by a Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) group. It is one of many informational essays explaining different faith groups and controversial social debates to be found on the Religious Tolerance.org web site. The Adventist movement consists of a number of conservative Protestant faith groups that have many beliefs and practices. Many mirror those of fundamentalist and other evangelical denominations. One difference is Adventists follow injunctions in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) that requires religious services to be held on Saturdays, rather than Sundays. Prominent in the Adventist movement is the Seventh-day Adventists denomination.
Terminology:
Members of the Seventh-day Adventists™ are also called Adventists and SDAs. The church prefers the term "Adventist" although the term "SDA" is in very common use. The acronym "SDA" can cause confusion because it is shared by many unrelated groups. Examples are the : Scottish Downhill Association, Survey Documentation and Analysis, Surface Design Association, Sociological Data Archive, and probably hundreds of others.

This box: view talk edit The Seventh-day Adventist Church holds a unique system of eschatological (or end-times ) beliefs. Adventist eschatology, which is based on a historicist interpretation of prophecy, is characterised principally by the premillennial second coming of Jesus Christ . Traditionally, the church has taught that the second coming will be preceded by a global crisis with the Sabbath as a central issue. At Jesus' return, the righteous will be taken to heaven for one thousand years . After the millennium the unsaved will be punished by annihilation while the saved will live on a recreated Earth for eternity. The foremost sources are the biblical books of Daniel and Revelation . Jesus' statements in Matthew 24 for instance, as well as many other Bible verses are also used. The classic Adventist commentary on the end-times was

27 Fundamental beliefs of Seventh-day Adventists
Go to Seventh-day Adventist Offical Baptismal Vows
Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as their only creed and hold certain fundamental beliefs to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. These beliefs, as set forth here, constitute the church's understanding and expression of the teaching of Scripture. Revision of these statements may be expected at a General Conference session when the church is led by the Holy Spirit to a fuller understanding of Bible truth or finds better language in which to express the teachings of God's Holy Word.
#1 The Holy Scriptures
The Holy Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God, given by divine inspiration through holy men of God who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. In this Word, God has committed to man the knowledge necessary for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are the infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the test of experience, the authoritative revealer of doctrines, and the trustworthy record of God's acts in history. Support is found in these Bible passages: 2Peter 1:20,21: 2Timothy 3:16,17: Psalms 119:105: Proverbs 30:5,6: Isaiah 8:20: John 17:17: 1Thessalonians 2:13: Hebrews 4:12
#2 The Trinity
There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship, adoration, and service by the whole creation. Support is found in these Bible passages: Deuteronomy 6:4: Matthew 28:19: 2Corinthians 13:14: Ephesians 4:4-6: 1Peter 1:2: 1Timothy 1:17: Revelation 14:7

Adapted from the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Nutrition Council
What is the vegetarian lifestyle?
For more than 130 years Seventh-day Adventists (SDAs) have practiced a vegetarian dietary lifestyle because of their belief in the holistic nature of humankind. Whatever is done in eating or drinking should honor and glorify God and preserve the health of the body, mind and spirit.
The vegetarian diet recommended by Seventh-day Adventists includes the generous use of whole grain breads, cereals and pastas, a liberal use of fresh vegetables and fruits, a moderate use of legumes, nuts, seeds. It can also include low fat dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheeses and eggs. It is best to avoid high saturated fat and cholesterol foods such as: beef, lamb, pork, chicken, fish and seafood. Coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages provide few nutrients and may interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients.

Seventh-day Adventists
The Seventh-day Adventist Church (abbreviated SDA ) is a denomination that grew out of the prophetic Millerite movement in the United States during the middle part of the 19th century. It considers itself a branch of Protestant Christianity, though differences in doctrine and practice have led some mainstream Christians to dispute that designation.
The name of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination indicates its two main distinctive characteristics: Sabbath observance on the seventh day (i.e., Saturday) and an expectation that the end of the world is drawing near. Other distinguishing characteristics include adherence to the teachings of Ellen G. White (who is regarded as a prophe), and various dietary observances rooted in Jewish law.
