  • Underwire and Bra FAQs (rec.crafts.textiles.sewing)
  • Quilting : I designed this in fall of 1991, and made one copy in queen size that December. It took about 2.5 weeks working constantly and by myself, but it's all machine pieced and machine quilted. I don't have the time or patience to do it any other way. It's also maybe about Intermediate-to-Advanced and would be great for a group project. I am not ready to put my directions for it up on the web, however. It's mine. Besides it's written on a Mac and not everyone could read it, anyway, cos it's got pictures drawn into it, too.
  • Here's an interesting link (I seem to recall one of my friends mentioning using this or similar items), on making your own sanitary pads: Manymoons How To (If that doesn't work, try: http://pacificcoast.net/~manymoons/howto.html) If you sew, this seems like a really useful item to be able to make. In the old days, fabric pads were bulky rags you strapped on with a belt (hence the monikers some modern storebought pads have of variations of "stay-free", the strap system was the "stays" that refers to. Betcha' didn't know dat. It's also the origin of that nasty phrase "on the rag".). Now if you choose to wear pads they're very slim, adhesive-backed, many with wings, and highly absorbent, as are tampons (Rely is why tampons don't have gel in them like diapers do). An alternative for a host of reasons is to make your own pads. Have fun with these. If you don't like what you make, you aren't going to wear it. Cloth sanitary pads have come a long way, baby. (Some of you will even remember where that meme comes from!)

Sewing provides the opportunity for young people to experience a sense of accomplishment associated with completing a project. It also provides an opportunity for youth to understand textiles, construction techniques, design principles as well as develop eye/hand coordination. Research has found that youth who sew develop skills needed to become more creative thinkers. The experiential learning activities in the Sewing curriculum are designed to provide a positive learning experience for youth. Sewing helpers are encouraged to focus on the fun, experience, and accomplishments attained in the project rather than on attaining "perfection."
The 4-H Sewing Essentials program is available nationally through the 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System as a three level, one helper guide set of curriculum emphasizing experiential learning and exploration. For more information go to the 4-H Cooperative Curriculum Web Site at www.n4hccs.org/.
