30. 14th Century Sewing & Textile Information - Period Sewing And Finishing Techniqu
Dame Helen's three classes from Pennsic. Cotehardies from Greenland Gowns, Houpelande Theory Class, and 14th Century Sewing and Textile Information.
http://www.damehelen.com/sewing/index.html
Index Cotehardies from Greenland Gowns Houpelande Theory Class Stiches Used ... Bibliography Section # 1 Stitches Used (primarily from Crowfoot et al) Most of the construction stitches found appear to be running stitches of various types (as opposed to back stitches). Major seams were sewn with a simple running stitch, occasionally reinforced by opening the seam flat, and placing another row of stitches on each seam allowance, parallel to the seam. Most of the stitches found were quite small, being 2 to 4 mm in length. ( Figure 7a) Back stitches are believed to have been used when seams came under pressure or stress, such as at an armhole or on the back of closely fitted hose. Although no examples were found in the London dig near Baynards Castle, they are used to hold down seam allowances in the Greenland gowns, particularly in stressed areas such as bodice seams. ("Where the seams of the side gores come together at the waist they are ornamented with a row of backstitches that make them very conspicuous." Norlund, p 108 referring to gown # 41) (Figure 7b) The fabrics discovered in London, England are mainly felted wool. Felted wool does not fray as readily as other fibers, therefore little seam finishing was required. The reinforced running stitch would give some protection against the little fraying that occurs in these fabrics. (Figure 7c)

Fire-Breathing Fancy You fan the flame. The day after Charlotte was born, my sister, Julia came to visit us in the hospital.  While holding Charlotte for the first time, Julia leaned over to me and whispered, "The baby just told me something.  She said, 'I am my own self.'"  I was puzzled and dismissive at first, "Yeah, whatever."  Then a tetch concerned (knowing Julia and her knack for such things).  "If that's the vibe my sweet little baby is putting off already, then I'm in for it," I thought, "especially once she's a teenager." So, how much stock can you put in the proclamations of a one-day-old baby? My German Singers
(sewing machines, that is)
A US made and German made Singer 401
It all started with the desire to purchase a sewing machine to actually SEW with (such a novel thought). So, I researched what was out there, and a common consensus was that the older Singers were much better than any of the 'plastic wonders' available today. So, with that knowledge, I set out to buy my first machine. My first one is a US made 401A. Wonderful machine, and the one I actually USE. But, I kept hearing about the 'holy grail' of the slant needle machines, the 431G. And, after a while, I found one. Thus, started my collection of my GERMAN SINGERS. *UPDATE* This collection has taken on a life of its own! Once I found all (?) the variations of the German 400 series, and the German 401 treadle machines, the collection expanded into the 400 series made in other countries. I have a Canadian 401J (even if the serial number is US), and now an ITALIAN 401M! I also have a few non-German, non-400 series machines. I LOVE my two Singer 320s that were made in the UK. One has the 'typewriter' on the top, and one doesn't! I'll try to get more pictures up here when I have more time. Enjoy!

General information: Quilting and Sewing Quilts are celebrations of color. To love quilting is to love color, and as quilters know so well the love of color translates into the love of fabric. Perhaps, like many quilters, you've found yourself leaving the fabric store with enough fabric for your current project as well as several future projects tucked in for good measure. So much fabric that you've had to find creative places to hide ... woops ... store them. With so many beautiful fabrics, in every conceivable color who can resist? After all, the pink you found today will be perfect with the green you found last week. Today, more than ever, quilters have reason to celebrate. There are plenty of resources, thousands of patterns past and present as well as wonderful tools developed to provide quilters with faster, easier techniques for quilting by hand or machine. So, whether beginning a simple project to learn the basics or using polished skills to create an intricate heirloom piece, decide on a pattern, choose your fabric ... get ready, set, celebrate!

Stuff I Made. Really.
No foolin'.
April 2003 - Stuff that is Yet to be Made
Precious little sewing time available in April and May, as three weeks are being spent in England for work, then home for a week, then in Virginia for a week for work, then home for two weeks, and out on vacation (woo hoo!) for the last two weeks in May. It looks like June before I'll be able to start another serious project. May do some some test sewing on scraps and preordering patterns, although I did go a bit berzerk at the Hancock Fabrics' "All McCalls Patterns for $1.99" sale a few weeks ago, and have, oh I don't know, a few billion new patterns piled up. Trying to think straight for what I need to do - there are many gifts, just about all of them for friend's babies. I (ahem) accidentally ordered ten tons of fleece (or so it seems, at any rate) which is now piled up higher than my head in the sewing room closet. Most of it is in dark colors, hence it isn't really a candidate for the aforementioned baby gifts. You don't normally see babies wrapped up in black buntings or with dark brown blankets on them. I'm thinking dog beds and car blankets all around for Xmas presents. I've never actually sewn a fleece project before, but my friend Kate assures me it's easy. I like easy.
