Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are very common. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by infections that are passed from one person to another during sexual contact. These infections often do not cause any symptoms. Medically, infections are only called diseases when they cause symptoms. That is why STDs are also called "sexually transmitted infections ." But it’s very common for people to use the terms "sexually transmitted diseases" or "STDs," even when there are no signs of disease. The good news is we can protect ourselves and each other from STDs. Practicing safer sex allows you to reduce your risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases. And if you've done anything that puts you at risk of infection, getting tested allows you to get any treatments you may need. Find out if you should get tested for HIV, chlamydia, or gonorrhea, three dangerous STDs, with The Check We are here to help. The caring staff at your local

Summary
These guidelines for the treatment of patients who have sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after consultation with a group of professionals knowledgeable in the field of STDs who met in Atlanta on September 2628, 2000. The information in this report updates the 1998 Guidelines for Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases MMWR 1998;47[No. RR-1]) . Included in these updated guidelines are new alternative regimens for scabies, bacterial vaginosis, early syphilis, and granuloma inguinale; an expanded section on the diagnosis of genital herpes (including type-specific serologic tests); new recommendations for treatment of recurrent genital herpes among persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); a revised approach to the management of victims of sexual assault; expanded regimens for the treatment of urethral meatal warts; and inclusion of hepatitis C as a sexually transmitted infection. In addition, these guidelines emphasize education and counseling for persons infected with human papillomavirus, clarify the diagnostic evaluation of congenital syphilis, and present information regarding the emergence of quinolone-resistant

Sexually Transmitted Diseases
VENEREAL DISEASES (STD)
SYMPTOMS Chlamydia does not always have warning symptoms. Here is a brief comparative analysis of the symptoms of nine of these STDs: Chlamydia: Genital Herpes: Itching and burning in the genital area. Discomfort when urinating. A watery vaginal or urethral discharge. Fluid-filled, weeping, eruptions in the vagina or on the penis. Genital Warts: Single or clustered, soft, cauliflower-like growths in and around the vagina, anus, penis, groin, and/or scrotal area. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Fever and lower abdominal pain. A pus-filled vaginal discharge. Trichomoniasis: Syphilis: a sore on the genitals; accompanied by rash, fever, patches of flaking tissue; sore throat; and sores in the mouth or anus. Gonorrhea: AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome): Aids has many symptoms; see " AIDS ." Venereal diseases are transmitted by intimate contact, when at least one has had more than one partner. STDs can cause urinary tract problems, sterility in women, and prostatic inflammation in men. At the present time, one teenage girl in four has a STD. Some of these diseases can kill newborn babies.

  • Many STD’s are spread through contact with infected bodily fluids. The only way to prevent STD’s is not to have sex. Using a condom EVERY TIME you have sex lowers your STD risk. Early treatment is important to lower your risk of future problems.

Who gets STDs? Anyone who has had sexual contact can get an STD. Men and women of all ages, regions, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels can get them. One out of four Americans between ages 15 and 55 will catch at least one STD. However, STDs are most common among teens and young adults, with about two-thirds of all STDs occurring in people under age 25. This is because young people are more likely to be more sexually active and take more risks, and the cervix of a female teenager is more likely to get infected by chlamydia and gonorrhea How are STDs spread?

According to government figures diagnoses have hit a 10 year high with rates of chlamydia and gonorrhoea in particular rising dramatically since 1995. The number of people visiting Genitourinary medicine clinics (GUM clinics) in the UK has doubled in ten years. Experts warn complacency about safe sex messages had led to the soaring infection rates, particularly among young women and gay men.
