The Culture of the Seychelles
"...The Seychellois are friendly people who openly invite guests into their homes..."
The Seychellois people are a unique blend of Créole, Indian, Chinese, French and British Bloods. They lead a very simple life where tourism is carefully monitored in order to protect the natural charm of the island. The main languages are French, English and Creole. On first meeting, shaking hands is the customary form of greeting. The Seychellois are friendly people who openly invite guests into their homes. It is a common gesture to present a gift when visiting someone's home. There are a wide variety of shops selling a range of gifts from local handicrafts such as batik, tablemats and ornaments to jewellery made from green snail shells. Shops are open from 0800-1700 weekdays and Saturday 0900-1200. There is little nightlife in the Seychelles but you can enjoy an evening of the local music (camtolet) accompanied by SAGA dancing. Alternatively some of the larger hotels hold barbecues and dinner dances. Dress is casual although gentlemen are requested to wear "long" trousers after 18.00hrs in the majority of hotels.

The cosmopolitan Seychellois are a colourful blend of peoples of different races, cultures and religions. At different times in its history, people of African, European and Asian origin have come to Seychelles, bringing with them their distinct traditions and customs and contributing to the way of life and to the vibrant Seychellois culture.
One can see these influences at work throughout the domains of local art, cuisine, music, dance and architecture.
The architectural design of some of the grand old houses with their steep roofs are representative of a style adapted for comfortable living in the tropics that displays influences from Seychelles’ French and British colonial heritage. Modern architecture attempts to assimilate traditional styles with practical features designed to capture the island breezes.
Local artists continue to exhibit diverse styles that echo the multi-ethnic backdrop of the islands and bear testament to the various influences which have come to bear. Creole music and dance have their roots in African, Malagasy and European cultures with rhythms traditionally accompanied by simple drums and string instruments which, today, include such recent imports as the violin and guitar.

For a small country, there are several very well known painters residing there. Perhaps the best of these is Michael Adams who has a studio and gallery on the southwest coast of Mahe. The Daily Telegraph said "Adams catches the spirit of the islands, his brilliantly colored silk-screens prints throb with life, pattern, activity and fun. Every surface is worked over again and again with animals, people, rampant vegetation and crisp white buildings..." The silkscreen shown here is "Anse Royale," presented courtesy of Mango's Fine Art Gallery in Barbados which exhibits a retrospective of Michael's works. Other artists are Leon Radegonde, Gerard Devoud and Marc Duc. Museums
In Victoria you'll find the National Museum on Independence Avenue, the History Museum on State House Avenue and both the National Library and National Archives are on Francis Rachel Street. The National Museum exhibits local cultural and natural history along with artifacts including ship wreckage, coral, voodoo implements, stuffed tortoises, old musical instruments and household objects and various possessions of the pirates who once roamed the waters.

Seychelles : Culture
Until the mid-1800s, little formal education was available in Seychelles. Both the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches opened mission schools in 1851. The missions continued to operate the schoolsthe teachers were monks and nuns from abroadeven after the government became responsible for them in 1944. After a technical college opened in 1970, a supply of locally trained teachers became available, and many new schools were accomplished. Since 1981 a system of free education has been in effect requiring attendance by all children in grades one to nine, beginning at age five.90% of all children also attend nursery school at age 4.The literacy rate for school-aged children had risen to more than 90% by the late 1980s. Many older Seychellois had not been taught to read or write in their childhood, but adult education classes helped raise adult literacy from 60% to a claimed 85% in 1991. Seychelles has received funds for developing its educational programs from several multinational sources. These include a grant from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1988 and a US$9.4 million loan from the African Development Bank in November 1991.
