    Seychelles Geography
Seychelles is located in the Indian Ocean about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) east of Kenya. The nation is an archipelago of 155 tropical islands with two distinct collections of islands: granite and coral. The coral islands are flat and have no fresh water. The early human history of Seychelles saw the disappearance of most of the giant tortoises from the granite islands, felling of coastal and mid-level forests and extinction of a few species. The marine life around the islands, especially the more remote coral islands, is abundant. More than 1000 species of fish have been recorded. Since the use of spear guns and dynamite for fishing was banned through efforts of local conservationists in the 1960s, the wildlife is unafraid of snorkelers and divers. Coral bleaching has damaged many reefs, but some reefs are showing healthy recovery. The reefs comprise a vast selection of soft corals and hard corals alike. The taking of marine turtles was completely stopped in 1994, turtle populations are now recovering on several protected islands. Seychelles is hot and humid, with an average yearly temperature of 84F (29C), and average sea temperature rarely dropping below 81F (27C). However, the heat is usually mitigated by refreshing sea breezes, especially by the beaches. The cooler season in Seychelles is during the southeast monsoon season (late May to September) and the warmer season is during northwest monsoon (March to May). Most of the islands lie outside the cyclone belt, so high winds are rare.

Geography Lying 1593 km East of Kenya, 2813 km South West of India and 925 km North East of Madagascar makes this archipelago strategically located. It consists of 115 islands, of which 76 are coralline and the remaining are granitic. The main part of the archipelago is situated between 4 and 5 degrees South of the equator at a longitude between 55 and 56 degrees east, allowing it to enjoy a favorable climate. But Seychelles is also lucky to be situated in a zone free from cyclones. All the main islands are granitic and Mahe is the principal island (153 skm with 80% of the total population). The estimated population is 80,000 in 1998. The coralline islands are low averaging 1.5 meters above sea level and seldom exceed 9 to 15 meters in height Supplies of fresh water are scarce and settlements are small with rarely more than a hundred people. Many of these islands serve as rookeries for large bird population. In contrast the granitic islands rise from the sea to altitudes of 600 to 1000m. The topography is rugged with outcrops ofhuge boulders. Fresh water is provided by surface streams.

For such a small nation, the Seychelles Islands form an expansive archipelago that includes more than 100 islands in the beautiful Indian Ocean. There are two main types of islands in the Seychelles. There is a group of central islands that includes Mahe outer islands are made from coral reefs and coral atolls. These islands are flat, and generally small, with elevations only slightly above sea level. Most of the small islands do not have water mains, and several of them are uninhabited.
The inner islands have high humidity, and plenty of rainfall, conditions made to nourish the lush and abundant tropical rain forest. Wildlife includes impressive sea creatures like the green sea turtle that live on the reefs, and enormous land turtles. All the islands are now carefully preserved from human encroachment. The Seychelles Island geography is unique in all the world, with species of plants and animals that are found nowhere else.
