With few surviving members, Shakers today are mostly known for their cultural contributions (especially style of music and furniture).

The Methodists were not the only religious group to begin in eighteenth-century Britain. New communities of “charismatic” Christians also took shape during this time. One of the most important of these new movements was the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, or the Shakers. While their monastic, communitarian life has been studied extensively, little attention has been given to Shaker preaching, particularly in the early days of the order. The first members of the group were known as “Shaking Quakers” because of the ecstatic nature of their worship services. Begun in 1747, the members looked to women for leadership. Jane Wardley and Ann Lee were the most important. Jane Wardley was an articulate preacher who urged her followers to:

THE SHAKERS
O ne of the numerous religious sects who emigrated to American shores in search of religious freedom, the Shakers followed Mother Ann Lee to the United States in 1774. Here they established several colonies the first in 1776 at Nikayuna near Albany, NYwhose governing principals included celibacy and agrarian communal living. The term Shakers, originally used as a pejorative for members of a dissenting Quaker church which called itself the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, referred to the sect's ecstatic form of worship. Founded in England in 1747 the Shakers practiced a religion that was also a lifestyle. The members lived in gender segregated, dormitory-like housing, but came together to work, and pray. Like the Quakers they believed in personal communication with a God who was both male and female and in the ability to find and give voice to the Inner Light. Those expressions took the form of hymns and work songs, of which SIMPLE GIFTS is the most famous, as well as rhythmic swaying and "dancing" when the spirit moved them.
Besides leading a simple but comfortably self-sufficient existence from the fruits of their land, the Shakers came to be known for their architecture, crafts, and furniture. Shaker design, with its clean, economic lines, is the quintessential statement of the happy marriage of form and functiona tangible embodiment of the Shaker credo: "Beauty rests on utility."

From LoveToKnow 1911
SHAKERS, an American celibate and communistic sect , officially called "The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing" or "The Millennial Church." 1 The early Quakers were sometimes called Shakers, and the name, or its variant, Shaking Quakers, was applied in the early 18th century to a Manchester offshoot of the English Quakers, who, led by James and Ann Wardley, accepted the peculiar doctrines of the French Prophets, or Camisards , of Vivarais and Dauphine .° The Wardleys were succeeded by the real founder of Shakerism, Ann Lee (1736-1784), the daughter of a Manchester blacksmith. Although a believer in celibacy , she had at her parents' urging married one Abraham Stanley (Standley, or Standerin); had borne him four children, who died in infancy ; had joined the Wardleys in 1758; and had influenced their followers to preach more publicly the imminent second coming and to attack sin more boldly and unconventionally. She was frequently imprisoned for breaking the Sabbath by dancing and shouting, and for

Shakers
Home Library US History Encyclopedia The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing was a small sect founded by working-class men and women in Manchester, England, in the late 1740s. These "Believers," as they called themselves, were derided as "Shakers" because their bodies shook and trembled in religious devotion. Convinced that the Day of Judgment was nigh , they expressed contempt for earthly authority and respectable churches. Ann Lee, the illiterate woman who would become the sect's revered American leader, was jailed twice for disturbing Anglican services. In 1774 a small cohort immigrated to New York and eventually clustered in the Hudson Valley, north of Albany, but they had not escaped repression . Shakers were arrested as troublemakers whose pacifism undermined the revolutionary cause. They were whipped, beaten, and accused of witchcraft . As they began to draw American converts, "Mother Ann" Lee's prophecies and teachings set the rules and defined the goals of life within the United Society. After her death in 1784, some believers regarded her as the second incarnation of God.

The Shakers have several “official” names: the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing; the Millennial Church; the Children of Truth; the Alethians (derived from the Greek word for truth). The sect first appeared as an offshoot of the Society of Friends (Quakers), around 1750 in Manchester, England. The leaders of the groupwhich was called the Shaking Quakers, or Shakerswere husband and wife ministers James and Jane Wardley. The Shakers broke off from the mainstream Quaker church and came under the influence of a group of charismatic preachers and miracle-workers called the “French Prophets.” The Shakers were best known for the fervor of their worship services. Like the Quakers, Shakers would sit in silent meditation, waiting to be “moved by the Spirit,” but the Shakers’ response to this spiritual power was to tremble violently (hence “Shakers”) and to spin and dance. Under the influence of the holy Spirit they engaged in group ring dances, marches, singing and shouting, speaking in tongues (glossolalia), prophecy, faith-healing, miracle-working, and spiritual trances, often accompanied by visons.

The Shakers (United Society of Believers)
See The Museum Displays Sections for some photograhs of the Shaker collection items. Shakers were among the most successful religious communal societies in the United States. Belief in the equality of men and women, separation of sexes, confession, communal ownership of property and celibacy helped to define their society. After founding communities in the east, the Shakers moved westward in 1805 to spread their beliefs. Union Village (1805-1912) in Warren County, Ohio, the first and largest Shaker community west of the Allegheny Mountains, was established in 1805. Nearly 4,000 Shakers lived in Union Village (about three miles west of Lebanon), the last living here until about 1920. This community owned and farmed about 4,500 acres of land with more than 100 buildings. Union Village was parent to other communities in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Georgia. By the 1840s, Union Village had reached a population of 700 believers, making it the second largest Shaker settlement after Mt. Lebanon, New York.

"When I first `discovered` the Shakers about fifteen years ago, it came as a revelation. Here were craftsmen and women who treated working with their hand as an act of worship, who made everything from a simple candle sconce to large items of built-in furniture to the very best of their ability. Each piece was made with the same care and attention to detail achieving a high level of craftsmanship and a reputation for quality that has long outlived them. In my own way, I have tried to follow these ideals. I use traditional methods of construction, ones the Shakers would have been very familiar with, together with American hardwoods like Black Cherry and Rock Maple to reproduce their designs which have a natural charm and timeless beauty. It is my sincere hope that anyone who buys a piece of my furniture will have as much pleasure from living with it as I had in making it for them." - Colin Ashman "Tis the gift to be simple"
