French Camisards and Quakers: The French Camisards, whose religious beliefs inspired both the Quakers and Shakers, originated in southern France during the 17th century. Influenced by the French Calvinists, the Camisards, whose name originated from the Provence word camiso, or chemise (shirt), rebelled against the royal persecution of their faith by the French authorities. The Camisards held some of their leaders to be Prophets, whom they claimed heard the word of God. They battled the armies of the French King Louis XIV from 1702 to 1706. Losing the battle, some Camisard survivors fled to England, where they continued to practice their beliefs. It was when these exiles preached in England that some Quakers fell under their influence.

When you are shopping for a new cocktail shaker the choices can be overwhelming as there are many styles and designs available. The first decision is to choose between a traditional cocktail shaker and a Boston shaker. The main difference between these two styles is that the cocktail shaker has a built in strainer and the Boston shaker requires a hawthorne strainer. There are also designer shakers with all the function but extra style.
    Quick Strain Tins
Quick Strain Tins were designed by a seasoned bartender for professionals. The Boston shaker-style mixing tins have straining holes around the rim and eliminate the need for an external strainer. The tins are available in the Original style with a full strainer, Perfect Pours with three sections of holes, a Small Tin and a Vinyl-Dip Tin. They're very convenient, easy to use and are usually less than $20. Manufacturer's Site Read Review zSB(3,3)

    A Guide to the Collections
of The New York Public Library
The Research Libraries of The New York Public Library collect extensively on Shakers and Shakerism, a religious movement formally known as the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Coming. This Christian body has received considerable scholarly and popular attention. Although initially related to elements of Quakerism, the Shakers developed an idiosyncratic religious expression which included communal living, productive labor, celibacy, and a ritual noted for its dancing and shaking. While the eclectic nature of Shaker theology has been the focus of scholarly attention, the distinctive craftsmanship and folk art of Shaker lifethe results of an avowed commitment to a life of perfectionhave attracted popular interest. A significant aspect of Shakerism is its founding by a woman, Mother Ann Lee, who was regarded by her followers as the second incarnation of Christ. Although the movement began in England under Ann Lee in 1758, the small body of believers removed itself to America under her leadership in 1774. Shakerism's unique role in American social and cultural history has manifested itself in a significant literature, by members and outsiders alike, much of which has been collected by the Research Libraries.

      Origin of the name
The name Shakers, originally pejorative, was applied by outsiders as a mocking description of the group's rituals of trembling, shouting, dancing, shaking, singing, and glossolalia (speaking in strange and unknown languages). The first documented use of the term comes from a British newspaper reporter who wrote in 1758 that the worshippers rolled on the floor and spoke in tongues.
      History
The Shakers were an offshoot of English Quakers who had adopted some of the doctrines of worship followed by the Camisards (a French religious sect living in England). Under the leadership of James and Jane Wardley, husband and wife, the Shakers became known for their intense, ecstatic worship. The Wardleys' followers writhed and trembled, purportedly under the influence of the

The Shakers were celibate, they did not marry or bear children, yet theirs is the most enduring religious experiment in American history. Seventy-five years before the emancipation of the slaves and one hundred fifty years before women began voting in America, the Shakers were practicing social, sexual, economic, and spiritual equality for all members.
Shakerism was founded by an illiterate English factory worker named Ann Lee. Guided by divine visions and signs, she and eight pilgrims came to America in 1774 to spread her gospel in the New World.
