SHARKS
By Tony Corey
The word "shark" might evoke images of the massive, spike-toothed maw of the great white shark immortalized in Jaws. The great white as the archetypal shark emphasizes the dramatic characteristics often associated with sharks—imposing size, formidable jaw and crushing bite, swift and sure attack. But there is such diversity among animals carrying the name "shark" that the Hollywood stereotype can scarcely measure up. Three hundred fifty species of sharks are identified worldwide, including 73 species known to inhabit U.S. Atlantic coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean waters. What identifies them all as sharks is the combination of paired fins, including pectoral fins whose rear edges are free rather than attached to the head; five to seven gill slits; and rough, sandpapery skin. Beyond these common characteristics, a wealth of variations distinguishes one shark species from another. Evolutionary fitness Fearsome teeth may contribute to sharks' hunting success, but other adaptations also enhance their effectiveness as predators. Sensitive smell receptors, eyes that can adapt to dim light, a receptor system that senses movement in the water, and electroreceptors that can detect prey buried in the sand secure the shark's status as apex predator.

"THE KIDS' HOW TO DO (ALMOST) EVERYTHING GUIDE"
Edited by Murray Suid, Monday Morning Books, Box 1680, Palo Alto, California 94302
(www.mondaymorningbooks.com) Sharks are apex predators, the "top dogs" of the marine world. They have a reputation as bloodthirsty killing machines, but this view is distorted. Sharks are not unique in consuming animals. For example, humans are predators, eating cattle, pigs, chickens, fish, and other creatures.
As apex predators, sharks limit the populations of the animals they eat. This maintains the balance of nature. Sharks occasionally do attack humans, but not all attacks are feeding events. Sharks sometimes grab humans by mistake. Other times an attack may protect a shark's space, much as a dog barks at and bites intruders.
The yearly average of unprovoked shark attacks on humans is 75, resulting in about 10 deaths. These worldwide numbers are small given the millions of humans that enter the water. You have a better chance of dying from a bee sting, a dog or snake bite, or lightning than from a shark attack.

For lots of reasons we'll chat up, most shark species make inappropriate to very challenging aquarium selections. Let's review who the sharks are, which can be adapted to captive care and what's known concerning what does work to keep them alive.

I've always had a great interest in sharks. As a scuba diving instructor, I've tried to dispel the general public belief that sharks are killing machines. My first shark sighting while snorkeling was a fascinating experience. Since, I have developed a greater curiosity and interest for those beautiful creatures. Most books on sharks are outdated by the time they go to press. For the latest information, I asked my friend Wade Smith a Marine Biologist studying sharks to contribute to our educational goal by writing this section on sharks. Wade and I are working together to provide you the most accurate and interesting facts about sharks. J-Philippe

Introduction
Sharks have long evoked more fear than any other creature. Snakes, crocodiles, and tigers are highly effective predators and dangerous to humans, but they don’t seem to be as universally feared. Sharks move efficiently and swiftly through an environment where humans may struggle or feel awkward. The power of the ocean and the mystery of what cannot be seen beneath its' waves adds to the fear of sharks. In 1865, Thoreau noted, "I have no doubt that one shark in a dozen years is enough to keep up the reputation of a beach a hundred miles long." The reputations and mysteries surrounding sharks far exceeds our understanding of them.

SHARKS To those unfamiliar with the patterns and behaviors of sharks, it seems almost unfathomable that anyone would willingly put oneself close to them. This, however, is precisely what our passengers do every week. People have been diving with sharks in the Exumas since 1992 without any incidents. There are no records of scuba divers being bitten in the Bahamas other than those that tried to grab or touch a shark, were spearfishing, or were hand-feeding sharks. To keep our shark dive safe for both customers and crew, we lower a frozen chumsicle from the surface so that no humans get near the food. The primary sharks we have on our dives are Caribbean reef sharks and nurse sharks. Tom Wilson of Sandy, UT shot the video at right. It will give you an idea of what our shark dive is like. Shark Identification
Historically, sharks left the area when scuba divers enter the water. The bubbles from the regulators scared them off. Since shark dives started in the Bahamas, many of the sharks have lost their fear of these bubbles. Has that made them more aggressive towards divers? No, but your chance of seeing a shark on a non-shark dive has increased greatly. Instead of diverting their course several hundred feet away from you, they now continue their planned course that frequently brings them close enough to be seen. This is a list of the sharks that have been seen on the trips of the Aqua Cat, Cat Ppalu and Blackbeard’s Cruises:

This initial objective was soon broadened to include conducting original research on the general biology, behavior and ecology of sharks indigenous to waters off the Pacific Coast , with particular emphasis on potentially dangerous species.
