Imagine you were out on the sea with your speedboat. Then a fin comes up right beside your boat. You are sure it is a dolphin because no one can swim as fast as this animal. After a couple of seconds the creature jumps out of the water extremely high. Now you can see the rest of its body and you slowly recognizea shark! Sharks are good swimmers; they can reach a speed up to 40 mph. The maco shark is the fastest. For a short distance it can reach up to 60 mph. This shark is also a good jumper. It jumps about 6.5 yards high out of the water. One of the Oldest Creatures on Earth 100 million years before the dinosaur age sharks already swam through the oceans. The oldest shark lived about 400 million years ago. Since 60 million years ago, there are some shark families which didnt change very much if you compare them to sharks today. Different Kinds and Their Treats One shark is not like another shark. In all we know about 360 kinds of sharks. Half of those live on the bottom of the sea and they never come near a human. The others live near the surface of the oceans. Sharks have all different kinds of shapes and sizes. There are sharks only 6 inches long and others which are 15 yards long. The biggest sharks are mostly the most peaceful sharks. For example, the whale shark or the giant shark only eats plankton and tiny crabs. Other sharks eat only little fish, crabs, mussels, sea stars, and other little sea creatures. Very dangerous sharks are the blue, Greenland, riff, hammerhead, and great white or mako sharks. They can eat seals, sea lions, sea elephants, and even polar bears.

Surround yourself by these intimidating animals in , the largest most comprehensive interactive exhibition about sharks ever mounted, at the Miami Museum of Science, February 10 through September 9, 2001. Museum guests dive into the world of sharks by exploring a simulated underwater environment, where sounds evoke an ocean realm and sunlight filters through dark water. Suspended throughout the environment are more than 25 life-sized models of sharks and rays, ranging from the tiny 18-inch catshark to the enormous great white, a shark that can be nearly 20 feet! Visitors can also check out the real thing! Get up close and examine unique bamboo sharks, beautiful leopard sharks, swell sharks, horn sharks, rays, and many more! These tanks allow visitors to come face-to-face with these mysterious creatures of the deep. Some baby sharks grow inside leathery cases called "mermaid's purses." Visitors will be able to see inside "the purse" to witness the development of these live babies, and then, can check in later on the Shark-Cam to watch their progress.

A Shark in Captivity Links Classification Kingdom: Animalia Plylum: Chordata Class: Chrondrichthyes SubClass: Elasmobranchii Order: Lamniformes Genus: Carchardon Species: carcharias back to the top Many people have a big fear of sharks, especially Great Whites. A lot of this comes from movies like Jaws - which is based on a number of attacks that really happened in New Jersey in 1916. Some people think that there are tons of sharks waiting to eat them if they venture out into the ocean, which is simply not true. Sharks rarely ever eat humans and are solitary animals. They either travel alone or in groups of two. Shark attacks are quite rare, in the US there are two to three non-fatal attacks on swimmers, surfers, and divers per year. By the number of reported incidents, Dogs kill more people each year than Great Whites have killed in the last 100 years. There are lots of divers who swim with sharks and are not attacked. In fact, there are places where you can be guided on a dive with sharks after just one dive lesson. They get used to people and get quite tame. Sharks are misunderstood animals.

66. About Prehistoric Sharks-Megalodon,fossil Teeth,
A detailed look at the evolutionary history of sharks and Shark-like fishes from the Shark Attacks website.
http://www.sharkattacks.com/prehistoric.htm
Inhabitants Of Ancient Seas There were sharks in the oceans of earth long before the first animals had begun to colonies the land surface. Their history stretches back for at least million years, a vast period of time which makes the 2-million-year-old history of humans genus Homo) seem insignificant by comparison. The planet earth is at least 4500 million years old. The earliest signs of life date back 3000 million years, and by 600 million years ago quite complex animals and plants existed. The story of the backboned (vertebrate) animals -the fishes and other forms that eventually led to humans -began about 600 to 500 million years ago. The first definite fossil of a creature with a stiffening notochord along its back was a Cambrian animal called Pikaea, which was discovered in 560- million-year-old rocks in Canada. The oldest complete fish fossil so far found came from central Australia, and was ajawless, armoured fish called Arandaspis

Sharks are divided into 21 families and approx. 350 species. Sharks represent an extremely ancient lineage. The basic physiology of sharks has changed very little over the past 450 million years (Silurian Period) since they appeared on the evolutionary scale. top placoid scales / denticles
Characteristics
Sharks have a skeleton composed of cartilage rather than bone. Only their jaws are calcified. Cartilage is an ideal tissue for the shark skeleton because it is lighter than bone, which is important for sharks do not have a swim bladder.

ALL ABOUT SHARKS! What is a Shark? Shark Information Sheets Shark Printouts to Color Evolution of Sharks ... Extreme Sharks GREAT WHITE SHARK Carcharodon carcharias GENERAL DESCRIPTION The great white shark is a streamlined swimmer and a ferocious predator with 3,000 teeth at any one time. This much-feared fish has a torpedo-shaped body, a pointed snout, a crescent-shaped tail, 5 gill slits, no fin spines, an anal fin, and 3 main fins: the dorsal fin (on its back) and 2 pectoral fins (on its sides). When the shark is near the surface, the dorsal fin and part of the tail are visible above the water. COLORATION
Only the underbelly of the great white shark is actually white; its top surface is gray to blue gray. This is useful in hunting its prey. The great white usually strikes from below and its grayish top coloration blends in with the dark water, enabling it to approach the prey unobserved.

Galeocerdo cuvier Photo modified from Sharks and Rays . TC Tricas, K Deacon, P Last, JE McCosker, TI Walker, L Taylor. 1997. Nature Company Guides, Time Life Book Series. Weldon Owen Pty Ltd San Francisco. This large, dangerous shark is to tropical waters what the great white is to temperate waters. It is named fro the dark strips on its gray back, which pronounced in juveniles but become pale or disappear in large adults. Its wide mouth, broad nose, barrel chest, and the slenderness at the base of its tail are distinctive. So, too, are its heavily serrated, cockscomb-shaped teeth. These, combined with its jaw strength, allow it to cut the bodies of large sea turtles, as well as seals, sea lions, and cetaceans.
They are active at night, and enter shallow reefs and lagoons after dusk to feed. In certain areas they migrate between island groups to take advantage of colonies of young birds learning to fly over water. Generally, tiger sharks are sluggish, but they can move quickly when feeding, and should be treated carefully on the rare occasions they are sighted. If you see one while diving, calmly leave the water, keeping it in sight at all times. Diet One of the few true scavengers, it has eaten cattle, pigs, donkeys, sheep, and humans that have fallen overboard. It also has a liking for such spicy treats as venomous jellyfish, stingrays, and sea snakes.

Why should we save our sharks?
The sharks are among the most important 'keystone' marine species. This means they have an significant role in maintaining the equilibrium of the marine environment. For example, they can regulate the balance between different fish species: when large sharks are removed, other commercially-important fish populations may be out-competed by less valuable fish which were formerly eaten by the sharks.
Shark and ray fisheries, when properly managed, can be provide an important and sustainable source of food and income to fishing communities.
Sharks and rays are highly valued by some sports anglers. Anglers take only small numbers of fish, but may contribute significantly to our knowledge of these fish by participating in tagging and research programmes, and are important contributors to the economy of coastal communities.
These are some of the most interesting and spectacular of marine animals. Like the large land predators (such as lions and tigers), they are valued greatly by many for the intrinsic fascination they engender. Divers long to see sharks and rays in the open ocean, and the public flocks to see them in aquariums. Boat trips to see basking sharks are even beginning to help support coastal tourism in some west coast areas.
