Odyssey Marine Exploration has accomplished some of the most successful deep-ocean expeditions in the world, resulting in the discovery of hundreds of shipwrecks. Further, numerous shipwreck projects are in various stages of development. Supported by the most advanced deep-ocean technology, our world-class team of researchers, technicians and archaeologists work around the clock while traveling the globe in a relentless quest for shipwrecks, the fascinating stories they tell, and the amazing cargoes and treasures the vessels once carried. While we generally do not disclose information about specific shipwrecks during the search process, once a site is protected or the excavation is completed, we share our discoveries with the world. The artifacts and treasure, photos, video, and archaeological information are made accessible to the public through our website, books, numerous professional papers and presentations , newspaper and magazine stories, television programs and traveling exhibits Explore the links to the left for more information on some of our shipwreck projects.

Ships of Exploration
The most well known shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico come from a more recent time period, but ships have sailed these waters since the 16th century. Many of these early vessels foundered or ran aground. Though documentation of their exact location is rarely accurate, several of these wrecks, ranging in date from the 16 th through the 18 th centuries, have been identified throughout the Gulf. Em anuel Point Shipwreck One of the earliest shipwrecks discovered in the Gulf of Mexico was located in Pensacola Bay, Florida, in 1992. The site was identified during a remote sensing survey by archaeologists with the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research. Over the last nine years researchers from the University of West Florida have conducted underwater excavations of the vessel. They hypothesize that the wreck is the lower hull of a Spanish vessel that dates to the Tristan de Luna expedition of 1559. Analysis of the magnetic signature of this early shipwreck has provided the MMS with valuable comparative data for the review and analysis of shallow hazard and archaeological survey reports. L aSalle Shipwreck Project One of the most significant underwater archaeological finds in North America was made by a team from the Texas Historical Commission (THC) in 1995 in 12 feet of water in Matagorda Bay, Texas. After the team recovered a distinctive bronze cannon bearing the crest of Louis XIV they hypothesized that the vessel was the French ship

The Beginning
Welcome to the Whitby Dive Site I hope you find it interesting. My first introduction to sub aqua diving was as a member of the BSAC in 1985 and continued on through the diver grades to become an Open Water Instructor using my knowledge and experience to introduce students to the wonderful world of sub aqua diving. Along with some close friends we were planning to open a new diver training school here in Whitby alongside a shop. To meet the criteria set by the BSAC I was happy to begin the process of advancing my instructor to the next level as a BSAC Advanced Diving Instructor. I had passed the theory test, unfortunately finding a local suitable inland location outside of the diving season proved difficult as we had suffered some bad weather. The BSAC coach was far from encouraging and had little enthusiasm preventing me taking it any further, and thus ending our school / shop plans.
Practical Diving
As far as diving went my passion was wreck diving. I looked forward to the challenge that deep diving offered reflected in the majority of dives I undertook. It would be quite difficult to choose the best dive I have ever done, but a 58 metre dive to an unknown wreck is one of my most memorable. The wreck was known locally as

Northern Shipwrecks Database
This database was developed and compiled by Northern Maritime Research. It features more than 50,000 records of North American marine casualties over the last four centuries. The system was designed as a reference for resources for the study of shipwrecks concentrating on the area of North America between the 40th degree of North Latitude and the North Pole as well as Canadian vessels lost world wide. The database provides a quick guide to maritime casualties by vessel name, region or date of wreck. The system is based on data from government documents, port records, vessel lists and registries, and newspapers, plus hundreds of other references. The database includes references to over 700 sources including museum and archival material.
Maritime History Archive Shipwrecks File
This database includes information of shipping disasters taken from the shipwrecks files at the MHA. The data was compiled mostly from newspapers and reports of the Canadian Coast Guard and covers the period from 1880 to 1930.

      Natalia
      By Katja Huebner
The Mexican company Compania Cosmopolitana, under the direction of Jose Maria Padres and Jose Maria Hijar, bought the brig Natalia in Acapulco on June 21, 1834, for $14,000, (payable in 7200 arrobas of California tallow). Padres and Hijar planned to settle a colony of immigrants from Mexico on the California frontier, in the Santa Rosa valley, and export the California products the settlers would eventually produce. They hoped to make a profit monopolizing the growing California trade. The Natalia set sail from San Blas, Mexico for Monterey, California on August 1, 1834, under the command of Captain Juan Gomez. In Monterey harbor on the afternoon of December 21, 1834, a storm struck, and the ship's anchor chains parted. A customs boat sent to help the Natalia capsized in the surf. The Natalia's crew hoisted the spritsail, in an attempt to control the ship, but it did not help matters. The brig drifted toward the mouth of the Salinas River, but before reaching it, was driven ashore about two miles above the town. Efforts were made to turn the bow to shore, but this too failed and the Natalia beached broadside. By midnight, the ship had split in two and the cook and two sailors were killed in the process.

Now viewable HERE From the very first Native American occupation of this region, people have been using Lake Champlain for sustenance, warfare, commerce, and now recreation. It forms a natural water highway between the Adirondacks to the west and the Green Mountains to the east. Military control of the lake meant control of the surrounding regions. Later the lake was used for commercial purposes, shipping goods and products north into Canada and south to the Hudson River. Join us as we discuss these timeframes in Lake Champlain History With such active use of the lake, accidents were inevitable. Boats from every time period in history have been sunk, and not all of them unintentionally. The list of shipwrecks below is by no means exhaustive. These represent only a sampling of the sites strewn across the bottom of Lake Champlain. Shipwreck Tours!

The sanctuary is home to numerous shipwrecks, reminders of this nation's maritime heritage. These shipwrecks are tangible connections to the past that allow us to study and better understand human history. The sanctuary is required by the National Marine Sanctuaries Act and the National Historic Preservation Act to locate, asses, protect, manage, and interpret its maritime heritage resources. Shipwrecks are nonrenewable gateways to the past and it is through the interpretation of these archaeological resources that the sanctuary hopes to increase public enjoyment and appreciation of New England's maritime history and foster stewardship of America's maritime legacy.

    Introduction
Welcome to the West Coast National Marine Sanctuary Shipwreck Database. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has been working in partnership with the BRIDGE to provide teachers and students with an online educational activity to learn more about important shipwrecks found within the 5 national marine sanctuaries (Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, Cordell Bank, Gulf of the Farallones and Olympic Coast) on the West Coast of the United States. The idea for this Shipwreck Database and the associated activities sprung from a collaborative effort with the Bridge to create a Data Tip of the Month highlighting our National Marine Sanctuary System. We wish to acknowledge the input from Bridge staff in developing this resource. We are pleased that our efforts to produce a special feature have resulted in the synthesis of much valuable information and the creation of a permanent database for your use. This data tip activity contains the following components:
    • Data tables containing 30 shipwrecks from each of the West Coast sanctuaries Navigational charts for each sanctuary Casualty reports and images from selected shipwrecks A Data Exercise where you can plot the shipwrecks in each sanctuary Questions related to shipwrecks in each sanctuary Answer Key
