SS Commodore
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Commodore (shipwreck) Jump to: navigation search The SS Commodore at dock The Commodore was an American steamboat that shipwrecked off the coast of Florida on January 2, 1897, while en route to Cuba . The event was immortalized when passenger and author Stephen Crane , who was traveling as a war correspondent for the Bacheller-Johnson syndicate, wrote the classic short story " The Open Boat " about his experience. Crane and three other men, including the ship's captain, Edward Murphy, were stranded in a 10-foot (3.0 m) dinghy for nearly thirty hours near the Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse (today's Ponce de Leon Inlet Light ) before they were able to reach shore; all but one of the men survived.

Off Egypt's Red Sea coast, a team from the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) and Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities excavates an Ottoman-period shipwreck once brimming with coffee , spices and Chinese export porcelain , now home to exotic fish and coral. This immense, mysterious ship lies more than 100 feet beneath the sea and has surprised scholars with new evidence for international trade and contact in the western Indian Ocean. The wreck, located during a 1994 shipwreck survey , is INA's first excavation in Egypt. Founded by Dr. Cheryl Ward and Douglas Haldane, INA-Egypt 's mission is the exploration and preservation of Egypt's maritime heritage . Egyptian and American conservators in the Alexandria Laboratory for the Conservation of Submerged Antiquities , a joint project of INA-Egypt and Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), work together to preserve the thousands of objects diving archaeologists retrieve from the sea. One hour HD Documentary
By Nomee Landis
Through a historic archaeological expedition and recovery effort involving dozens of scientists, the latest in deep-sea recovery equipment and the work of a remarkable filmmaker, the clues of the Mardi Gras, the working name of this mystery ship, are finally being revealed to the world. Scientists and archaeologists from and the U.S. Minerals Management Service in New Orleans established a list of questions to be answered by the Mardi Gras expedition : What is the real identity of the ship? What flag did she fly? Who were her crew members? Was she a pirate vessel or a merchant ship? And what were the circumstances of her demise in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, 40 miles off the coast of modern-day Louisiana?
In May 2007, freelance producer and director Rick Allen of Nautilus Productions along with two of his crew members, boarded the Toisa Vigilant , a research vessel docked at Port Fourchon, La. For three weeks, Allen and his team, marine biologist Lawrence Taylor, a Canadian filmmaker, and nautical archaeologist Kim Eslinger, would live in close shipboard quarters as part of a 60-member expeditionary contingent whose mission it was to bring the stories of the Mardi Gras wreck back to the surface. Their task would be to capture in high definition video all of the deep-sea excavation work taking place thousands of feet below by remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, and to document as much of the action on deck as possible.

S.S. Pomona Shipwreck Project
The steamship Pomona ran aground on March 17, 1908 while on a routine trip near Fort Ross Cove, 80 miles north of San Franciso. Built in 1888 by the Union Iron Works of San Francisco, the Pomona is perhaps California's best representation of 19th century steam ferry transportation along the Pacific Coast. Indiana University, in cooperation with the California State Park System, is involved in ongoing research and investigation of the SS Pomona shipwreck at Fort Ross State Historic Park. In August 1998, site survey and archival research were conducted on the site by Indiana University and California State Parks. The goal of the survey was to assess the site as to its archeological value and viability for possible establishment of an unde rwater park. A detailed site report contains background information regarding the ship's history, updated site plan and description and analysis of sites features such as the Scotch boiler , and the Carnegie fire brick During August 2000 field project at the Pomona, Indiana University placed a spar marker buoy on the site, developed a prototype underwater guide

A team of underwater archaeologists from the Vancouver Maritime Museum conducted a series of dives to document the shipwreck Baymaud off Cambridge Bay. Baymaud sank in 1930 after a short but famous career in the Arctic. The project was the first to map a shipwreck in the Arctic. Baymaud was built in Kristiana (now Oslo) Norway as the ship Maud in 1917 for explorer Roald Amundsen. Amundsen was the first explorer to navigate the Northwest Passage and to reach the South Pole. He designed Maud to freeze in and drift in the ice. Amundsen's intended destination was the North Pole. The First World War and the fear of German submarines led Amundsen to sail for the Bering Straits by way of the Northeast Passage, across the top of Europe and Asia. It proved to be a mistake. The ship was frozen in thick ice on the coast of Siberia for two years. Amundsen nearly died on the expedition, once when mauled by a polar bear, the other when he nearly succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning while taking scientific observations alone in a unventilated tent. Scientists have found oldest shipwreck in Alaska
KODIAK (AP) ‹ Scientists say they have found what they believe to be the wreckage of the Russian sailing vessel Kadiak, which sank in 1860 in shallow waters near Spruce Island. ''We have discovered what we believe to be a significant archaeological site,'' said Dr. Brad Stevens, who spearheaded the project. If the scientists are correct that their discovery is the remains of the Kadiak, then that makes it the first shipwreck found from the Russian American colonial period, which also makes it the oldest shipwreck found in Alaska. The Kadiak, piloted by Capt. Illarion Ivanovich Arkhimandritov, was a Russian American Company ship, based out of Sitka but home-ported in Kodiak. The Kadiak transported ice from Kodiak to San Francisco.
