Singapore culture
Singapore culture has a strong influence of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures. The diversity of Singapore culture is due to her history. Singapore was once a popular free trading port in the 18th century which attracted many Chinese immigrant from China, Indian from India sub-continent, Malay from the Malay peninsular and Eurasian from the various part of Europe who came to trade in Singapore or work in Singapore and later settle down at this cosmopolitan island. These ethnic races still evident in modern Singapore today, though most of the Singaporeans do think of themselves as Singaporeans, regardless of race or culture, each still bears its own unique character and this mixture of cultures formed the Singapore culture.

I love commerce. Commerce and technology define the "modern world." Both thrive on meritocracy, diversity and openness.

The Peranakan Heritage of Singapore The early Chinese community who settled in the Malay Archipelago from the 17th century are known as the Peranakans. The Singapore Peranakan is a rich blend of the Malay and Chinese cultures. Many people in Singapore also called Peranakans as Babas and Nyonyas ( male and female Peranakans respectively ) Baba culture is an amazing and unique creation of South East Asia. For many centuries , Baba culture has managed to maintain many ancient Chinese traditions while at the same time adopting many customs of the land they settled in. This culture has some influence from the Portuguese , British , Dutch , Thai , Indian and the Indonesian cultures as well. Sarongs and Kebayas are the popular costumes of Babas and Nyonyas . Though of Malay origins , these are often embroidered with Chinese motifs to distinguish themselves from their Malay counterparts. The most popular costume pieces among Nyonyas and others alike , are the colorful beaded handbags and shoes. This tedious and painstaking work that uses mainly the needle and thread needs months and years of practice to achieve perfection. Golden hairpins and other wide array of jewelery are also worn by the Nyonyas on a daily basis. The Peranakans consider food and cooking an accomplishment. Nyonya cuisine indicates strong Malay , Indonesian and Indian influence , as seen by the curries and condiments usually found on a Baba family table. Nyonya food is a synthesis of many tastes. It is often a blend of spicy , tangy , herbal and sweet dishes. Coconut , candlenut , turmeric and fragrant lemon grass are essential to this cuisine.
