The Development of Singapore
Singapore was a trading center in the Srivijaya empire before it was destroyed in the 14th cent. by the Majapahit empire. It later became part of Johore (see Johor ) in the Malacca Sultanate. The sparsely populated island was ceded (1819) to the British East India Company through the efforts of Sir T. Stamford Raffles ; he founded the modern city of Singapore there that same year. In 1824, Singapore came under the complete control of the British and, although containing only a small fishing and trading village, quickly attracted Chinese and Malay merchants. The port grew rapidly, soon overshadowing Penang (see Pinang ) and Malacca (see Melaka ) in importance. With them Singapore became part of the Straits Settlements in 1826.

When Sir Stamford Raffles claimed Singapore for the British East India company in 1819, it was nothing but a swampy, thickly jungled island populated by a handful of fishermen and sea gypsies. Today it is a vibrant, modern city-state of 2.8 Million people - one of Asia's economic "dragons" and the regional centre for trade, transport, banking, tourism and communication . Singapore 's success is due mainly to its ideal location on the busy sea routes between East and West. For centuries before Raffle's arrival the island had witnessed the passage of Chinese junk, Buginese (prabus),Arab (dhows) and Indian vessel of every shape and size .

Singapore History
The Singapore history can be dated back to the beginning of 3rd century when the island was a part of the Chinese account. Located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore history states that the island began gaining importance mainly from the 14th century.
Srivijayan prince Parameswara ruled the island till 1613, when he was defeated by the Portuguese invaders. The period under the rule of Parameswara is considered as the early history of Singapore
Singapore was an important place for trade due to its very strategic location. With the rising growth of the spice trading, Singapore soon became a point of interest for the British and Dutch traders. In 1819, a British port was established in Singapore by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles that marks the beginning of the modern Singapore history
In the following years Singapore became an important trade point for the English and other European traders. In 1824 the island was surrendered by the Sultan to the East India Company. Within the next two years, in 1826, Singapore along with Malacca and Penang were made to form the Straits Settlements.
During this period Singapore gained immense importance as a center of trade between India and China under the British imperialism. The Straits Settlements were dissolved in 1946, followed by which the island was declared as a Crown colony of Britain.

Written accounts of the early history of Singapore are sketchy and the names used to refer to the place are varied. A Chinese account of the third century refers to Singapore as Pu-luo-chung, translating the Malay words Pulau Ujong that refers to it as the 'island at the end' of the peninsula. The 1365 Javanese epic poem Negarakretagama identified a settlement called Tamasek, Water Town, on Singapore island. Chinese trader, Wany Dayuan, who visited Singapore around 1330 and referred to the settlement as Danmaxi, reported that there were also some Chinese living on the island. The

The history of the Singapore pledge
The National Pledge embodies the ideals for building a united Singapore. It was written by Mr. S. Rajaratnam in August 1966, the then-Minister for Foreign Affairs. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the then-Prime Minister of Singapore refined it before submitting it to the Cabinet for approval.
History
The National Pledge was written in the mid-1960s in the aftermath of the racial riots that had affected communal harmony in Malaysia and Singapore. Rajaratnam believed that race, language and religion were the main factors contributing to the division of the people. In wording the Pledge he sought to bring across the message that these differences can be overcome if Singaporeans were committed to and caring enough for their country. The dream for Singapore is spelt out in the ideals of the Pledge. It calls for a sense of nationhood to be fostered despite differences, and encourages all to bring reality to the dream of building a country which all Singaporeans could be proud of. Rajaratnam remembered taking only a day or two to pen the words although it was refined further by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew before submissions to the Cabinet. Some sources suggest Ong Pang Boon had a hand in the writing of the Pledge, but generally, Rajaratnam is credited for its entirety.
On 25 August 1966, about 500,000 students from 529 government and aided schools recited the National Pledge, the first time the Pledge was recited in schools. Led by teachers, the recital was done at the instruction of the Ministry of Education (MOE) which then said that pupils were to observe this ceremony with solemnity and respect, and to face the National Flag with their right hands raised. From 27 June 1988 however, students have been reciting the Pledge with their right fists clenched to their chests, a change which according to MOE was to better reflect the emotional aspect of saying the Pledge. The Pledge has since been recited on occasions of national importance such as the National Day Parade. Unlike the National Anthem and the Flag, there had been hardly any early newspaper coverage of the Pledge.

Travel Guides Asia Singapore Singapore History The initial accounts of the subsistence of Singapore are from the Chinese who described the island as Pu Lo Chung as early as in the third century. It is believed that Prince Sang Nila Utama came to the island in thirteenth century. The name of the city is also believed to come from the name of wild beast found in the region called as Singa or Lion. In 1330, a traveler from China named Wang Dayuan visited the Island of Singapore. He confirms about a small community in Singapore at that time that comprised of the Chinese and the Malay people. During the fourteenth century, Singapore lost in a Majapahit attack and Parameswara who was a prince of Palembang became the King of Singapore. But soon he was defeated by the Siamese forces and was forced to flee to Muar. The city was then ruled by Portuguese followed by the Dutch.
Modern history of Singapore
The modern history of Singapore starts from 19th century. In 1819, the British showed their interest in the place. They tried to over power the Dutch in Singapore. They established a trading center for the East India Company. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles became the first Governor General of Singapore. No later in 1822, Raffles showed his intention of setting up his colony in the place. Soon Singapore became one of the British colonies and was under the rule of the East India Company. The Dutch protested against the settlement of the British on their Island. This made a way to the famous Anglo-Dutch treaty in the year 1824 which carved the way of Singapore to come under the British rule. It was in 1830 that Singapore came under the Presidency of Bengal in India.
