Symptoms Indicating a Bacterial Infection. Sinus symptoms are very common during a cold or flu, but in most of these cases they are due to the effects of the infecting virus and resolve when the infection does. It is important to differentiate between inflamed sinuses associated with cold or flu virus and sinusitis caused by bacteria. With true acute bacterial sinusitis, the signs and symptoms typically have the following course:
  • Nasal congestion and discharge comes first and is typically thick with pus that is yellowish to yellow-green.

Bacterial Sinusitis Symptoms
By Sean Mack eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? Sinusitis is a common condition, usually occurring during or after a cold. There are many different types of sinusitis, but most types can quickly turn into bacterial sinusitis if proper medical care is not sought. Bacterial sinusitis starts as a simple inflammation of the lining of the sinuses. This inflammation then becomes infected by bacteria. To minimize the chance of developing bacterial sinusitis, pay attention to the symptoms at the beginning stages and seek medical care as soon as it appears that an infection is present.
Types of Sinusitis
  • Sinusitis is an inflammation of the membrane lining of the sinuses (the cavities around nasal passages). Acute sinusitis is an episode of sinusitis that typically lasts less than four weeks. Chronic sinusitis (also known as chronic rhinosinusitis) can last much longer. Acute sinusitis can be triggered by a cold, which is caused by a virus. The symptoms of colds, such as sneezing or a runny nose, can cause the membrane lining of the sinuses to become inflamed. This inflammation is the beginning of acute sinusitis. If the inflammation leads to a bacterial infection, the result is bacterial sinusitis. Fungal sinusitis is caused by the presence of fungus in the sinuses. However, cases of fungal sinusitis are less common than cases of bacterial sinusitis.

Unbelievable. Because the number and severity of sinus headaches has all but stopped, I am now able to work with another set of headaches that have always plagued me. tylenol One time I drank massive amounts of water and the headache was gone in 12 hours. Another time they started in again on a Wednesday so I took the cue and drank a lot of water and it went away. Since then I have been drinking a lot of water and all the headaches are gone. Sinus Headache Relief
This weekend I had a sore throat, upset stomach, and an off/and on again headache. When it came to the headache, I had tried tylenol but there was no change. I have avoided nasal decongestants because I want my body to function by itself, but with the illness, I needed extra help. Once I took a 12 hour ill, the mild congestion (one nostril at a time) cleared up fairly fast. Within a few hours the headache dissipated and has been gone since (24 hrs). For some reason, despite the location of the congestion (right or left nostril), when I get congested, pressure builds up in my nasal sinus cavities. This pressure leads to painful headaches.

      Introduction:
Sinusitis occurs when your sinuses air filled cavities around your nose, eyes, and cheeks – get inflamed. The inflammation is often due to an infection, caused by a virus (such as a cold), bacteria, or fungus. Healthy sinuses are open, allowing mucus to drain and air to circulate in your nasal passages. But inflamed sinuses are blocked, so that mucus can' t drain out, and eventually the sinus cavities become blocked. Sinusitis can be acute (with symptoms lasting less than 8 weeks), chronic (with symptoms recurring or lasting longer than 8 weeks), or recurrent (with three or more acute episodes a year). Most cases of sinusitis are acute and are caused by a cold. Sinusitis is very common. Each year, more 30 million people (adults and children alike) get sinusitis in the United States.

    Definition
Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses, which are air-filled cavities in the skull. The etiology can be infectious (bacterial, viral, or fungal) or noninfectious (allergic) triggers. This inflammation leads to blockade of the normal sinus drainage pathways (sinus ostia), which in turn leads to mucus retention, hypoxia, decreased mucociliary clearance, and predisposition to bacterial growth. • How are sinusitis symptoms different than a cold or allergy? When does acute sinusitis become chronic? What treatments are available?
What is sinusitis? Normally, mucus collecting in the sinuses drains into the nasal passages. When you have a cold or allergy attack, your sinuses become inflamed and are unable to drain. This can lead to congestion and infection. Diagnosis of acute sinusitis usually is based on a physical examination and a discussion of your symptoms. Your doctor also may use x-rays of your sinuses or obtain a sample of your nasal discharge to test for bacteria. When does acute sinusitis become chronic? When you have frequent sinusitis, or the infection lasts three months or more, it could be chronic sinusitis. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis may be less severe than those of acute; however, untreated chronic sinusitis can cause damage to the sinuses and cheekbones that sometimes requires surgery to repair. What treatments are available?
