The Personal Blog of Chris Fehnel Random ramblings of zero importance Home About Sinus Surgery April 27, 2006 They said I was on a multiple oxycodone and demoral concoction that would relieve the pain. They are liars. The gauze plug inside my nose swelled up and stretched out my already painful nostrils. This was the most painful aspect of the whole thing. I have had blood clot/snot removal on Monday, Wednesday, and now added to the party, Friday. They can only remove a little at a time before the flood gates open. And today was pretty much a wash when it came to getting anything out. Update 2/28/08: I had to have a second sinus surgery. This time he used the balloon to increase the size of the upper sinuses (where I have all my problems). He said the first surgery probably never even really got up that high, and I had a big polyp up there blocking everything up. This surgery is much better and I would recommend everyone to ask their doctor about this type of surgery instead. Nasal Polyps Nasal polyps are polypoidal masses arising mainly from the mucous membranes of the nose and paranasal sinuses. They are overgrowths of the mucosa that frequently accompany allergic rhinitis. They are freely moveable and non-tender. Nasal polyps are usually classified into antrochoanal polyps and ethmoidal polyps. Antrochoanal polyps arise from the maxillary sinuses and are much less common, ethmoidal polyps arise from the ethmoidal sinuses. Antrochoanal polyps are usually single and unilateral whereas ethmoidal polyps are multiple and bilateral. Symptoms of polyps include nasal block, sinusitis, anosmia (that is, loss of smell), and secondary infection leading to headache. The pathogenesis of nasal polyps is unknown. Nasal polyps are most commonly thought to be caused by allergy and rarely by cystic fibrosis although a significant number are associated with non-allergic adult asthma or no respiratory or allergic trigger that can be demonstrated. These polyps have no relationship with colonic or uterine polyps. Irregular unilateral polyps particularly associated with pain or bleeding will require urgent investigation as they may represent an intranasal tumour. The removal of nasal polyps via surgery lasts approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. The surgery is done under anesthesia, and the polyps are removed using endoscopic surgery. Recovery from this type of surgery is anywhere from one to three weeks.

Other types of polyps occur in the bowel or urinary bladder, but have no relationship to those in the nose and sinuses. Polyps in the bowel or bladder have a chance of being cancerous; polyps in the nose and sinuses are rarely malignant. Polyps can cause nasal blockage making it hard to breathe, but most nasal polyp problems can be helped. While some polyps are a result of swelling from an infection, most of the time, the cause for the nasal polyps is never known. A few individuals may have a combination of asthma, aspirin sensitivity, and nasal polyps. If aspirin is taken, the asthma and nasal polyps may worsen. It is this infected mucous that the patient experiences as a thick, discolored drainage in the nose and down the throat. This type of nasal obstruction and infection may also cause pressure over the forehead and face.
