Middle East Israel and Palestinian Authority History ... The Six-Day War
History, The Six-Day War
Unresolved issues from previous conflicts caused continual tension between Israel and the Arabs, which flared up yet again in the mid-1960s. Israeli and Syrian efforts to divert water from the Jordan River and disputes over the use of the demilitarized zone between the two nations led to numerous border incidents. In 1964 the Arab League created the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to promote Palestinian nationalist activities and sought to coordinate Arab military efforts. In 1965 Palestinians began armed attacks against Israel; Israel responded with raids against Syria and Jordan. Border incidents became progressively more serious, inspiring nationalistic fervor throughout the Arab world. In May 1967 Nasser called for the removal of UN forces from the Suez Canal region. He also organized a military alliance with Syria, Jordan, and Iraq and moved Egyptian troops and equipment into the Sinai Peninsula. In addition, Nasser closed the Strait of Tiran to Israeli shipping. After efforts at mediation by the UN and the Western powers failed, Israel launched a preemptive military strike against Egypt in early June. Jordan, Syria, and Iraq joined the fighting against Israel. The Egyptian air force was destroyed on the ground within hours of the start of the Six-Day War, and Israeli forces quickly seized the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula. Israel also took East Jerusalem and the West Bank from Jordan and the Golan Heights from Syria. Many Arabs fled these areas, which became known as the Occupied Territories. Israel placed the 1 million who remained under military administration. The USSR, which had supported the Arab alliance, and its allies immediately severed diplomatic relations with Israel.

In retaliation for a series of escalating border raids as well as the closure of the straits of Tiran and Suez canal to Israeli shipping, and to prevent Egyptian use of newly acquired Soviet arms in a war, Israel invades the Sinai peninsula and occupies it for several months, with French and British collaboration. Welcome and Introduction
This is an essay competition dedicated to commemorating the Six Day War, celebrating the reunification of Jerusalem, and expressing hope for peace for Israel and the Middle East. Israel and the Diaspora is under much pressure from well organised antagonists who portray Israel as the source of Palestinian, Middle Eastern and even global problems, so it is important to reflect on the Six Day War and what it was really all about, and what that might mean now. We therefore invite schools and communities , as well as students and young people of primary secondary and higher education age to participate in this competition.

America, Israel and the Six Day War
Elizabeth Stephens , 22 May 2007 History Today Military Israel USA ... Volume: 57 Issue: 6 Printer-friendly version The Six Day War spawned the special relationship between Israel and the United States of America. Elizabeth Stephens explores the cultural backdrop to this momentous development which resonates in the Middle East to this day. The Six Day War that erupted on June 5th, 1967, was a profound event in Middle Eastern history that reshaped the political landscape of the region and redrew the boundaries of the state of Israel. But its consequences are far wider reaching. In its lightning victory against the Soviet-supported Arab states of Egypt and Syria, and the pro-Western kingdom of Jordan, Israel not only re-wrote the political and military geography of the Middle East, it accelerated the pace of cultural identification between Israel and America. The short conflict was of far greater significance in consolidating the ‘special relationship’ between Israel and the world’s greatest superpower than Truman’s recognition of the Jewish state in 1948. The events surrounding the war brought together the strains of a cultural identification that underpins one of the most enduring, potent and anomalous alliances of the twenty-first century. The US was uniquely created from the desire of the Pilgrim Fathers to build a New World, free from the scourge of religious persecution and cultural decadence. The belief that God has blessed America has created the desire to shape the world in its image. It underlies Bill Clinton’s impulse to extend the sphere of democracies to the undemocratic world and George W. Bush’s description in his 2007 State of the Union address of the ‘war on terror’ as an ideological struggle. This desire is perpetuated by the country’s unrivalled military might that bestows the ability to shape international relations and to remove the leaders of states that are categorized as ‘rogue regimes’.

The purple line was the ceasefire line between Israel and Syria after the 1967 Six Day War.
History
Syria gained independence from France in 1946 and on May 14, 1948 the British withdrew from Palestine as Israel declared its independence. Syrian forces participated in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War between Arab forces and the newly established State of Israel. In 1949, armistice agreements were signed and a provisional border between Syria and Israel was delineated (based on the 1923 international border; see San Remo conference). Syrian and Israeli forces clashed on numerous occasions in the spring of 1951. The hostilities, which stemmed from Syrian opposition to an Israeli drainage project in the demilitarized zone, ceased on May 15, after intercession by the United Nations Security Council. In June 1967 after battling Syria, Jordan

Panorama Middle East Archives: The Six Day war
Key Info
  • Panorama Middle East Archives: The Six Day war Duration: On June 5 1967 Israel launched a strike against Syria, Egypt and Jordan which became known as the Six Day War. Israel claimed it was a pre-emptive strike in the face of a planned invasion of Israel by these countries. The war lasted six days. Israel's victory resulted in it gaining control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Desert from Egypt and the Golan Heights from Syria. The UN passed resolution 242 which stressed 'the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war' and called for Israel to withdraw from 'territories occupied in the recent conflict' as well as an end to "all claims or states of belligerency and respect for… the sovereignty… of every state in the area and their right to live in peace… free from threats or acts of force." Just days after the strike Panorama reported on the aftermath of the Middle East War. This clip was first published as part of Panorama Archive
