Everyone knows to wear “Green”
on March 17th ...
But why? ...
And who was St. Patrick Saint Patrick was the missionary credited with converting the Irish to Christianity in the late 300’s A.D. H istorical sources report that Saint Patrick was not even Irish! He was born around 373 A.D. in either Scotland or in Roman Britain (the Romans left Britain in 410 A.D.). His real name is believed to have been Maewyn Succat, but he changed it to Patrick after he became a priest. At the age of 16, while living in Ireland, he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery. D uring his 6-year captivity, he worked as a shepherd. He found strength in his faith. He finally escaped and made it to France, where he became a priest (and later a bishop). W hen he was about 60 years old, St. Patrick traveled back to Ireland to spread the Christian word. He used the green shamrock, which resembles a three-leafed clover, as a metaphor to explain the concept of the Trinity - father, son, and holy spirit. The Irish people embraced him. The old saint died in his beloved Ireland, March 17th, about 460 A.D. The land which once enslaved him, he had set free. T oday

F ATHERS' D AY H ISTORY

S onora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. S onora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. A fter Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

by David Herber
Born: 13 April 1570, Stonegate, Yorkshire
Died: 31 January 1606, Old Palace Yard, Westminster Guy Fawkes was the only son of Edward Fawkes of York and his wife Edith Blake. Prior to Fawkes's birth, Edith had given birth to a daughter Anne on 3 October 1568, but the infant lived a mere seven weeks, being buried on 14 November of the same year. Two sisters followed Guy, another Anne (who later married Henry Kilburns in Scotton in 1599) on 12 October 1572, and Elizabeth (who later married William Dickenson, also in Scotton, in 1594) on 27 May 1575. Edward Fawkes, who was descended from the Fawkes family of Farnley, was a notary or proctor of the ecclesiastical courts and advocate of the consistory court of the Archbishop of York. On his mother's side, he was descended from the Harrington family who were eminent merchants and Aldermen of York. Fawkes became a pupil of the Free School of St. Peters located in "Le Horse Fayre", which was founded by Royal Charter of Philip and Mary in 1557. He counted there amongst his schoolfellows

The trial of Guy Fawkes and others
The full transcription of the trial of the conspirators in the Gunpowder-Plot, from the Complete Collection of State-Trials , London 1776 is included here. The prosecution case describes the politicisation of late sixteenth century English Catholicism by the Jesuits and details the horrendous plot set into motion by their agents. Some modern historians (notably the Catholic Antonia Fraser) have doubted whether the prosecution case was not perhaps fabricated, which would allow the unfortunate Mr Fawkes and his confederates to claim probably the most resounding show trial of all time, suggesting perhaps that Beria and Dzherzhinsky were truly the heirs of Cecil rather than Robespierre. Gunpowder Plot When Mary, Queen of Scots fled to England in 1567, her thirteen-month-old son James was crowned king of Scotland. With his Catholic mother in England, James was brought up as a Protestant When Elizabeth I died in 1603 without children, Mary's son, was next in line to the throne. As James was a Protestant, Parliament was also in favour of him becoming king. The Roman Catholics in England were upset that there was going to be another Protestant monarch. They also became very angry when James passed a law that imposed heavy fines on people who did not attend Protestant church services. In May 1604, Robert Catesby devised the Gunpowder Plot , a scheme to kill James and as many Members of Parliament as possible. At a meeting at the Duck and Drake Inn Catesby explained his plan to Guy Fawkes Thomas Percy John Wright and Thomas Wintour . All the men agreed under oath to join the conspiracy. Over the next few months Francis Tresham Everard Digby Robert Wintour Thomas Bates and Christopher Wright also agreed to take part in the overthrow of the king.

William Parker
11th Baron Morley,
4th Baron Monteagle
by Jennifer O'Brien
Born:
Died: 1 July 1622, Great Hallingbury, Essex William Parker came from a family with strong catholic sympathies on both sides. The 8th Baron Morley was a devoted catholic under Henry VIII , and the 9th Baron Morley, William's grandfather, was considered a dangerous recusant who left England in 1569 and lived under Spanish protection. His father, Edward Parker, 10th Baron Morley also spent some time abroad as a recusant, and was forced to resign his hereditary office of Lord Marshal of Ireland. However, William seems to have learned the art of conformation quite well from his father, who later received the exclusive rights to publish a book instructing children on the taking of the Oath of Allegiance, and who served as a commissioner for the trials of Mary Stuart and Philip, Earl of Arundel, in spite of retaining his catholic sympathies.

By James P. Tucker Jr. "I am 100 percent Jew and I'm proud of that; I am also 100 percent American and I'm even more proud of that." Those were the words of the late Martin Price they should be the assurances of potential president Joe Lie ber man. Price spoke those words to a SPOTLIGHT editor in 1976 while researching the story of Israel's deliberate attack on the USS Liberty ship in the June, 1967 Six-Day War. History and reluctantly the Establishment later confirmed the story. But at the time, the editor was challenging Price's work line-by-line. "Martin, you are not only a Jew but the kind of Jew I would be if so born a strutting Jew," the editor said. "Are you comfortable writing that Israel deliberately attacked the ship and killed and wounded so many American sailors?" "You are of British descent," Price replied. "Would you be outraged if Britain attacked the ship?"

The Stuarts - The Gunpowder Plot
A Conspiracy or Not?
'Remember, remember, the fifth of November.
Gunpowder, treason and plot.'

Read the two different versions of the Gunpowder Plot and decide for yourself...
The Facts
A small group of Catholics, Robert Catesby, Guido (Guy) Fawkes, Thomas Winter, John Wright and Thomas Percy decided to blow up the King on the State opening of Parliament. They hoped that this would lead to a Catholic King coming to the throne. Guido (Guy) Fawkes was an explosives expert who had served with the Spanish army in the Netherlands. Monteagle alerted the authorities and a search of the Houses of Parliament led to the discovery of Guido Fawkes standing guard over the barrels of gunpowder. He was tortured and revealed the names of the conspirators. Catesby and Percy and two others were killed resisting arrest. The others were tried for treason and executed.
The Protestant View - The Conspirators were Guilty
This picture shows the conspirators hatching the plot to blow up the King and parliament. They are grouped close together which shows that they are hatching a secret plot.

Robert Wintour
by Douglas Burbury
Born: 1565 or 1567
Died: 30 January 1606, St. Paul's Churchyard, London Robert Wintour was the eldest son of George Wintour of Huddington Court and his first wife, Jane Ingleby. When George Wintour died in 1594, Robert inherited the bulk of the estate as the eldest son. This estate included the manor house of Huddington Court, near Droitwich in Worcestershire, which was the main seat of the Wintour family, hop yards and 25 salt-evaporating pans at Droitwich. The salt produced from these pans was said to be the best in England, and thus the pans were very profitable and formed a major source of revenue for the Wintour family. Robert married Gertrude Talbot, daughter of Sir John Talbot of Grafton in Worcestershire. Talbot was heir to the earldom of Shrewsbury and was one of the wealthiest landowners in the region, owning, among other estates, much property in Shropshire near Albrighton. He was also a firm Catholic, and had spent 20 years in prison for recusancy. Robert had thus allied himself with one of the strongest catholic families in the region, and Huddington Court under his care became a known refuge for priests. Two priest holes, which were probably constructed by Nicholas Owen, can be seen there to this day.

Syria gained independence from France in 1946 and on May 14, 1948 the British withdrew from Palestine as Israel declared its independence. Syrian forces participated in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War between Arab forces and the newly established State of Israel. In 1949, armistice agreements were signed and a provisional border between Syria and Israel was delineated (based on the 1923 international border; see San Remo conference ). Syrian and Israeli forces clashed on numerous occasions in the spring of 1951. The hostilities, which stemmed from Syrian opposition to an Israeli drainage project in the demilitarized zone, ceased on May 15, after intercession by the

"Remember, remember the fifth of November.
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot. I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot."
This poetic little rhyme, still popular among children today, continues to remind us why, on the night of November 5th, bonfires surmounted by cloth manikins or "Guys" are set alight in every town and village in Britain amongst a blaze of celebratory fireworks: The scene was the early 17th century Lambeth home of one John Wright deep in the suburbs of the City of London. Three British Catholic gentlemen met in secret to discuss their troubles. King James VI of Scotland had only recently taken on the English throne as James I but, despite promises of a relaxation in the anti-catholic laws, it now appeared that the new King would be even more severe in their persecution than his predecessor had been.
