Olympic History Alpine skiing competitions took place at the Winter Olympics in 1936, when a combined event was held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Since then, alpine combined was not contested at the Olympic Winter Games until 1988 in Calgary when it returned to the Olympic program. In 1952, the giant slalom was added as an event and in 1988, the super giant slalom became a fourth separate event. Alpine Skiing in Russia In the early 1900s, downhill skiers began to stand out among Russian skiers. They preferred speed downhill skiing and later got carried away by freestyle skiing, i.e. downhill skiing with turns which was later called slalom. Alpine Skiing grew rapidly in the ensuing years. In the 1970s, about 28,000 athletes were trained in sports centers for adults and children. About The Olympic Alpine competition consists of ten events: five for women and five for men. The rules are the same for men and women, but the courses differ.
