Jump to: navigation search Image:Skier-carving-a-turn.jpg Alpine skiing (or downhill skiing ) is a recreational activity and sport involving sliding down snow -covered hills with long, thin skis attached to each foot. Alpine skiing evolved from cross-country skiing when ski lift infrastructure was developed at mountain resorts to tow skiers back to the top of slopes, thus making it possible to repeatedly enjoy skiing down steep, long slopes that would be otherwise too tiring to climb up. The sport is popular wherever the combination of snow, mountain slopes, and a sufficient tourist infrastructure can be built up, including parts of Europe North America Australia and New Zealand , the South America Andes , and East Asia (mainly South Korea and Japan , although the popularity of skiing is increasing in China as well). The main technical challenges faced by skiers are simply how to control the direction and speed of their descent. Typically, novice skiers use a technique called the " snowplough/snowplow " to turn and stop by pointing one or both skis inward, but more advanced skiers use more difficult but more elegant and speedier methods. Modern advanced skiing technique is dominated by "carving." To carve, a skier rolls his or her knees from side to side while keeping the upper body and hips facing down the hill, so that only the knees and feet are turned. This method of turning allows modern skis to turn using the radial properties of the edges of the ski without skidding or slowing down, creating a smooth arc.

Olympic - present Alpine skiing (or downhill skiing ) is the sport of sliding down snow -covered hills on skis with fixed-heel bindings . Alpine skiing can be contrasted with nordic skiing – such as cross-country ski jumping and Telemark – in which skiers use free-heel bindings. Alpine skiing may take place at a ski resort where mechanical ski lifts have been installed to transport skiers up the mountain and where snow is groomed, avalanches are controlled and trees are cut to create trails. Alternatively, Alpine skiers may pursue the sport in less controlled environments; this practice is variously referred to as ski touring backcountry skiing or extreme skiing The sport is named for the European Alps where it originated in the late 1880s. A Swedish World Perspective
Although one thing that really drives me nuts is the half truths that people take for gospel about the US. Too much TV, too many movies. Leaves a bit to be desired sometimes.
Are Swedes so well informed because they are so small? A country the size of California with only nine million people. There is only so much going on in this country. Leaves a lot of room for international news.
Are Americans less informed because they are so big? Less room for international news.
    Does it matter?
    . Just like every
Maybe I have been colored by the people I hang out with, my family, my friends. I am a product of my environment. And my environment always seemed to have a pretty good international perspective. People travelled. A lot. People read. A lot. People went on to all sorts of higher education. And so, I have been surrounded by people who have been anything but ignorant in the face of international happenings.
