Diagnosis and Removal of Skin Cancer Lesions
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, with over half a mllion new cases being diagnosed each year. Most skin cancers occur in exposed areas of the body, such as the head and neck, arm and legs. The most common cause of skin cancer is exposure to the sun. Living in South Florida, we are daily exposed to large doses of ultraviolet rays that damage our skin, cause us to age prematurely, and may lead to the development of skin cancers. No one is immune to the development of skin cancer, but some individuals are more likely to develop skin cancer. These individuals include those:
  • With fair skin, freckles, light hair, and light eyes With numerous moles With a history of a severe sunburn at an earlier age With a personal or family history of skin cancer Who live closer to the equator where the sun is more intense Whose occupation or lifestyle causes them to be outdoors during the peak sun hours of 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Types of Skin Cancer
There are three main types of skin cancer, although other forms do exist. The most common form is basal cell carcinoma. Fortunately this is also the skin cancer with the best prognosis. It tends to grow slowly and does not often spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the body.

The three most common skin cancers are basal cell cancer squamous cell cancer , and melanoma , each of which is named after the type of skin cell from which it arises. Skin cancer generally develops in the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin), so a tumor is usually clearly visible. This makes most skin cancers detectable in the early stages. Unlike many other cancers, including those originating in the lung pancreas , and stomach , only a small minority of those afflicted will actually die of the disease. . In fact, though it can be disfiguring, except for melanoma, skin cancer is rarely fatal. Skin cancer represents the most commonly diagnosed cancer, surpassing lung, breasts, colorectal, and prostate cancer. Melanoma is less common than basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, but it is the most serious—for example, in the UK there are 9,500 new cases of melanoma each year, and 2,300 deaths.

Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood, nerves or lymph system, in a process called metastasis What is Skin Cancer? Skin cancer is a cancer of the cells in the outermost layer of skin, called the epidermis. The epidermis itself has three layers: an upper and middle layer made up of squamous cells, and a bottom layer made up of melanocytes and basal cells. Different types of skin cancer affect each of these types of cells, including the following most common forms: Basal Cell Carcinoma
    Basal cell carcinoma
(BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer, accounting for 75% to 80% of cases. Upwards of one million people are diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma each year in the United States. It was once found mostly in middle-aged or older people but now it is also being seen at younger ages. Basal cell carcinoma usually begins on areas exposed to the sun such as the head and neck. It is a slow-growing cancer that rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but people with a history of BCC are at higher risk for getting a second BCC. If basal cell carcinoma is not treated, it can damage the surrounding tissue, including bone.

    Understanding skin cancer
Skin cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up the skin . Normally, skin cells grow and divide to form new cells. Every day skin cells grow old and die, and new cells take their place.
Sometimes, this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the skin doesn't need them, and old cells don't die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor
Growths or tumors can be benign or malignant:
    • Benign growths are cancerous:
      • Benign growths are rarely life-threatening.

Each year more than a million people in the United States are diagnosed with the most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. These two diseases are typically grouped as non-melanoma skin cancers. Most people who are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancers are age 50 or older, but because these diseases often are a result of too much exposure to the sun accumulated over time, everyone even the youngest toddlers should take precautions against them.
