    Overview What Is It?
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, probably making up more than half of all diagnosed cases of cancer.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, probably making up more than half of all diagnosed cases of cancer, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). The incidence of skin cancer is rising dramatically in the United States. More than one million cases of non-melanoma are diagnosed each year, leading to about 2,000 deaths. And the ACS estimates that in 2009, there will be 68,720 new cases of melanoma and 8,650 deaths from the disease. In fact, between 40 percent and 50 percent of people in the United States over age 65 will develop non-melanoma skin cancer. This type of cancer is highly treatable when diagnosed in its early stages, and is usually relatively easy to diagnose.

    Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. More than one million cases are diagnosed each year, and according to current estimates, 40% to 50% of Americans will have skin cancer at least once by the time they are age 65.
    Types of Skin Cancer
The two most common kinds of skin cancer: Basal cell carcinoma accounts for more than 90% of all skin cancers. It is a slow-growing cancer that seldom spreads to other parts of the body. However, if left untreated, it can spread to nearby areas and invade bone and other tissues under the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma is much less common than basal cell carcinoma. It can be more aggressive than basal cell carcinoma and is also more likely to grow deep below the skin and spread to distant parts of the body. These types of skin cancer are sometimes called nonmelanoma skin cancer. When they are found early, there is nearly a 100% chance for cure.
