zSB(3,3) Arizona attracts people because there are over 300 days each year of blue skies and sunshine. While it is wonderful that we can enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise (hopefully!) in the process, we also need to be aware of the long term affects of the sun. Here is what you need to know about sun protection to avoid being one of the 500,000 people in this country each year who are diagnosed with skin cancer. Enjoy the Sun
When going outside always use a sunscreen. The higher the SPF rating of the sunscreen, the longer you can stay out before re-applying the sunscreen. What is SPF?
SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor. Take the amount of time it would take to burn without sunscreen (UV Index) and multiply it by the sunscreen's Sun Protection Factor to figure out how long you can be outside with sunscreen. For example, if it will take 15 minutes to burn today without sunscreen, and you use an SPF 8 product, you can say outside 2 hours without burning (8 x 15= 120 minutes or 2 hours). Is It That Simple?

      What's New?
BruiseCare™X8 is a therapeutic formula, that when applied to the skin, shows remarkable results in the healing of bruises on the hands, arms, and legs. This common condition, medically known as benign purpura, is caused by the aging process, sun exposure, or may be an unwanted side effect of some prescription drugs like blood thinners and steroids. Dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey Parks was concerned by the number of patients affected by this form of bruising, and was frustrated because he had no remedy for the condition. Along with a team of skincare experts, he set out to find an effective solution. It took considerable research, tenacious experimentation, and three stringent clinical trials before the perfect combination of ingredients were found. The results were astonishing.

ABOUT US CONTACT US SEARCH HOME ... Contributors Quick Links Cancer Health Centre Cancer isn't one disease, but a group of diseases, which cause cells in the body to change and grow out of control. Most types of cancer cells form a lump or mass called a tumour. Only a few cancers don't form a tumour, such as blood cancers (leukemia). Cells from a tumour can break away and travel to other parts of the body and, from there, continue to grow. This spreading is called metastasis. When cancer spreads - for instance, if breast cancer spreads to the lungs - it is still named after the part of the body where it originated. In this case, it is still breast cancer, not lung cancer. A cancerous tumour is called a malignant tumour. Tumours, however, are not all cancerous. Tumours that are not cancerous are called benign. In most cases, benign tumours are not life threatening, and do not grow and spread the way cancer does.

Finally, some good news about melanoma: Malignant melanoma is effectively preventable, successfully curable in early stages, and even treatable in advanced stages. Its cumulative 5-yr survival in the U.S. approximates 90%, which sounds good at first sight. Nonetheless, melanoma is one of the most dangerous cancer types in humans known to date, and it may affect individuals at all ages likewise, even children. So, melanoma matters to everyone.

    WHAT IS SKIN CANCER?
It is a disease where cancer ( malignant ) cells are found in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). Skin cancers can develop from a build-up of sun exposure over the years. There are 3 types of skin cancer.
    1. Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs on areas exposed to the sun. People with fair complexions who do not tan easily, are most at risk. Basal cell cancers do not usually spread through the body although it can spread below to the bone. Normally it's not life threatening but should be treated immediately.
Causes: Overexposure to ultra violet (UV) rays of the sun.
Diagnosis: Biopsy which is the removal by surgery of a sample of tissue for examination under a microscope to check forcancer. This is a simple and quick procedure. If the growth was only partially removed by the biopsy and is found to be cancerous, then the entire growth will be removed.
Warning Signs: How do you identify basal cell carcinoma?
