Lizards
Typical lizards superficially resemble salamanders, but their dry scaly skin, clawed feet, and external ear openings quickly seperate them from theri distant moist-skinned ancestors. Legless lizards may be confused with snakes, but unlike snakes, they possess movable eyelids. Glass Lizards - Family Anguidae Slender Glass Lizard Ophisaurus attenuatus . Uncommon to rare essentially statewide, this legless lizard is infrequently encountered and believed to be declining. Most known occurrences are from above Fall Line Hills. Generally associated with relatively dry, open habitats. MODERATE CONSERVATION CONCERN.

Lizards Many people think lizards only live in the desert. However, lizards are found almost everywhere around the world. There are almost 3,800 species worldwide. Over 110 kinds can be found in the United States. Lizards including iguanas, monitors, geckos, and horned lizards are the most common and fascinating reptile. In some areas of the US, people mistake lizards for salamanders. Salamanders and lizards are not related. Salamanders are amphibians like frogs. Lizards and snakes are closely related. Eastern Collared Lizard Size: The largest lizard is the Komodo monitor. It can grow to be over 10 feet long (3 meters). It can weigh nearly 300 pounds. The smallest lizard is a tiny gecko. Characteristics: Most lizards have dry, scaly skin, four legs, clawed feet, external ear openings, and a long tail. Lizards have a fragile, detachable tail. Many species have a weak point in their a tail. A slight tug or bump can be all that's needed to break it off. The thrashing tail distracts the predator. In some lizards, brightly colored tails increase the chance of losing a tail rather than losing a life. However, not all lizards lose their tails easily. For example, the collared lizard (above), has a sturdy tail that is rarely lost. Lizard tails help in balance and locomotion. Tails are also part of the social status and an area for fat storage. Losing the tail can be a serious problem for a lizard. If they live long enough, some lizards can grow back their tail.

The Blue-tailed Skink Cryptoblepharus egeriae ) is a skink native to Australia's Christmas Island and is not closely related to the Plestiodon skinks of North America, whose juveniles are known for their blue tails. It is relatively small with a black body with yellow stripes going to a bright blue tail.

edit Characteristics
Blue-tailed skinks are usually about 4 to 8 centimeters long. When they become frightened they have the ability to pop their tail off and it will continue to wiggle and distract their predator while they run away. When young they have a dark black body with bright yellow stripes leading from the back of the neck down to the meeting of the bright blue tail. As the juvenile males age, they lose their yellowish stripes and their back starts to become a brownish black color, and they begin to grow a reddish color underneath the neck during the mating seasons. Females usually keep their blue tail for their whole life, though. It is thought that the bright coloring on the tail is intended to direct the predator's attention to it, instead of the vulnerable body.

How to Care for a Skink
By an eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? Skinks usually reach an adult length of 8 to 12 inches with male lizards being larger than females. They come in many varieties with different colors and sizes. While all skinks are terrestrial and inhabit forest floors, they adapt well to cage life if properly cared for. Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
  • Enclosure Screen lid for enclosure Substrate Heat lamp Heat mat Full spectrum lighting Lighting timer
Provide an appropriately sized enclosure for the number of skinks you wish to purchase. You can house one male along with three females in a 20-gallon aquarium. You should also purchase a locking screen top lid for the aquarium to prevent escapes. Spread a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch, bark or soil in the bottom of your skinks cage to help maintain humidity.

Reptiles - Schneider skink lizards missing toes
Expert: Question I have two schneider skink lizards that have lived together for over 10 years. They live in my classroom. I noticed today one of them is missing its toes on its right front leg. What could of happened? I don't see the lizards fighting. Do they grow back and what can I do. I feel really bad for it. Answer Hello Marci, the toes will not grow back and if it is housed with another lizard of any type then that is most likely the cause. Unless perhaps you feed them crickets and left the crickets in there overnight? I suggest moving him to a separate enclosure, line the bottom with papertowels (safe and to reduce the chance of infection) Keep the new enclosure really clean increase the heat a couple degrees and use polysporin on any open wounds. A herp vet is the best thing for him so that he can get the proper anti-biotic or other medication needed to heal. And they can help with what to do after that and what to look for. I am sorry this happened and I hope he is ok and gets through this. Good luck

Smooth, sleek, and shiny are the adjectives used to describe the healthy skink. All the species of skinks found in Florida prowl on the ground for small insects, although the larger species also climb trees and wooden structures. The skink family is a large group and this lizard is found on all continents. Skinks are not easy to catch! Larger skinks may try to bite but a skink will rarely break the skin. Many skinks have blue tails. This may be part of a defense strategy called defective coloration. The blue color is supposed to serve as a warning to predators that the skink is poisonous and there is some actual evidence that the blue tails are poisonous if eaten. Southeastern Five-lined Skink Ground Skink- Ground skinks are small, slender lizards with long tails and short legs. They range from golden brown to almost black in coloration but are most often coppery brown with a darker stripe running along each side of the body. The belly is white or yellowish. Unlike many other lizards in our region, ground skinks virtually never climb. Rather than running on their tiny legs, ground skinks use their slender bodies to wriggle or "swim" through leaf litter or loose soil, often disappearing in a flash as soon as they are discovered. Ground skinks prey on tiny insects, spiders, and other invertebrates. Female ground skinks lay clutches of several eggs in moist soil or rotten logs during the summer. It is suspected that ground skinks may lay several clutches per season.

There are two species of skinks native to California:
Gilbert's Skinks, Plestiodon (Eumeces) gilberti , and
Western Skinks, Plestiodon (Eumeces) skiltonianus
(The scientific name Eumeces has been changed to Plestiodon by some herpetologists in 2008. The new name "Plestiodon" does not match most of the existing sources of information about these lizards.)
Appearance
Both are small to medium-sized lizards with smooth, shiny skin. The scales are not rough and raised up like they are on some other kinds of lizards, such as alligator lizards.
Adult Gilbert's Skinks are typically brownish with no pattern and no stripes and no color on the tail.
