Seeley Swan to Welcome Communities Recreation Real Estate Events ... Businesses Dog sled races headed our way Seeley Swan Pathfinder January 14, 1999 This winter, dog sled racing and dog tours will again be a feature of the numerous Seeley Lake area winter recreational activities. The Seeley-Monture 100 will be run on the weekend of Jan. 30 and 31. This 100-mile race is a "warm-up" for the Race to the Sky. It will start in downtown Seeley Lake on Sat. afternoon and offers excellent opportunities for spectators. The race includes an overnight camp with the dogs and the finish will be on Sun. morning. For additional information please contact Norman Lee at 677-3016. The race will restart in Lincoln on Sunday, February 14, and will go through downtown Lincoln and loop back to the Seven-Up club for the first checkpoint. It will then proceed to White Tail Ranch near Ovando and then to three checkpoints in the Seeley Lake area. The Seeley Lake checkpoints will be open from late Sunday evening through Wednesday evening. The Seeley Lake checkpoints include either Morrel Creek Trailhead or downtown Seeley Lake, Holland Lake Lodge, and Fawn Creek Trailhead. Volunteers are the backbone of all of these races. They staff the checkpoints, groom the trail, cook meals at the checkpoints, and help with various fund raising activities. As long as there is snow, there's bound to be someone somewhere running a team of dogs through it. Mushing is a recreation that has peaked and ebbed over the last thirty years - the 1980's being a high point, when almost everyone in America had at least heard the word Iditarod and watched the race between Rick Swenson and Susan Butcher with an interest that was reminiscent of the Riggs and King tennis match of the '70's. Many new mushers joined the bandwagon during this period, and hobby farmers were suddenly raising sled dogs instead of chickens. "Man would not be on the face of the earth if it had not been for the domestic dog," says Edward Dallas, as we visit with him at his home in Deerwood, Minnesota. Ed had a 10-minute stint as "Gunnar Tveit" in the Disney film Iron Will , and he had this to ask us: "What possessed the dog to break away from the wolf, the jackal, the fox, and step into that circle of light cast by our cavemen ancestors' campfire? Something had to possess him to say, 'I will step inside that circle.' And when he did, I think it was a bond that was set for the rest of time." These sentiments expressed by Dallas, a veteran dog musher, could probably be echoed by canine lovers all around the globe. But especially by dog mushers, who by choice spend the greater part of their day with their dogs. Sled dogs are mainly Alaskan Huskies, a Heinz 57 dog bred to pull and travel. "They were bred out of the Siberian Husky during the gold rush days," Dallas explains, "with Indian dogs, and other big dogs in the arctic, and a wolf thrown in here and there."

WordPress.org Search for: Search Welcome to the Plettner Kennels Lynda Plettner, owner of Plettner Kennels, is a 11 time finisher of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. She came to Alaska after training horses in CA for twenty years. Because of her love of animals, the shortage of horses but abundance of sled dogs, Lynda turned her training skills to the dog world. Her knowledge, patience, and perseverance earned her a very respectable position of finishing twentieth in the 2002 Iditarod. The 2002 Iditarod was Lynda’s best ever, not only because of receiving the “Most Improved Musher Award”, which moved her from sixty-sixth place in 2001 to twentieth in 2002, but because of receiving the prestigious and most coveted “ Leonhard Seppela Humanitarian Award”. This award is presented by the veterinarians working on the Trail, and is given to the musher with the healthiest, happiest and biggest dog team arriving in Nome. Lynda says that she had “thirteen barking, happy, line pounding dogs at the finish line”. This indeed was her best experience of her mushing career and she is looking forward to many more. Lynda loves participating in the Iditarod because she enjoys crossing the state of Alaska “on a vacation” with a dog team. There is no better way to see, feel, taste and smell the beauty of the state. She loves being alone out in the wilderness with her beloved and trusted companions, facing the challenges together.
