The Slovak Constitution provides for a multiparty, multiethnic parliamentary democracy, including separation of powers. Slovakia's highest legislative body is the 150-seat unicameral National Council of the Slovak Republic. Delegates are elected for 4-year terms on the basis of proportional representation. The Slovak political scene supports a wide spectrum of political parties ranging from the successors to the Communist Partythe Party of the Democratic Left (SDL)to the nationalistic Slovak National Party (SNS) on the right. Under the original Slovak Constitution, the president was elected by Parliament to a 5-year term. Since the Parliament was unable to agree on a successor to President Michal Kovac when his term ended March 2, 1998, most presidential powers reverted to the prime minister. In January 1999, Parliament passed a constitutional amendment allowing for direct election of the president. Kosice Mayor Rudolf Schuster was elected president in a May 1999 run-off with former PM Meciar and took office on June 15, 1999. The president serves as commander in chief of the armed forces, appoints ministers, grants pardons, and has the right to dissolve Parliament under certain circumstances. The president also signs laws and has the right to return legislation to Parliament, but Parliament can override this veto with a simple majority vote.

GOVERNMENT Slovakia's highest legislative body is the 150-seat unicameral National Council of the Slovak Republic. Delegates are elected for 4-year terms on the basis of proportional representation. The Slovak political scene supports a wide spectrum of political parties, including several social democratic parties and the nationalistic Slovak National Party. In January 1999, Parliament passed a constitutional amendment allowing for direct election of the president. Kosice Mayor Rudolf Schuster was elected president in a May 1999 run-off with former Prime Minister Meciar and took office on June 15, 1999. On April 17, 2004, Ivan Gasparovic, a former Meciar deputy, was elected president; he was re-elected to a second 5-year term on April 4, 2009. Virtually all executive powers of government belong to the prime minister, but the president serves as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, is empowered to grant pardons, and has the right to return legislation to Parliament. Parliament, however, can override this veto with a simple majority. The country's highest appellate forum is the Supreme Court; below that are regional, district, and military courts. In certain cases the law provides for decisions of tribunals of judges to be attended by lay judges from the citizenry. Slovakia also has a special Constitutional Court, which rules on constitutional issues. The 13 members of this court are appointed by the president from a slate of candidates nominated by Parliament.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Summer Archbishop's Palace The Summer Archbishop's Palace or Summer Archiepiscopal Palace Slovak Letný arcibiskupský palác ) is a palace in Bratislava which houses the government of Slovakia (the Slovak Republic Government Office). The palace was originally in the 17th century a Renaissance summer seat for the archbishops of Esztergom (since Esztergom had been occupied by the Ottoman Empire in 1543, the archbishops were based in Bratislava). In 1761-1765, Austrian architect F. A. Hillebrandt had it converted into a large Baroque palace. Also, Rococo style decorations, a Rococo fence and a yard of honour were added. The sculptor Georg Rafael Donner had a studio in the palace garden. The palace garden with many of its precious decorations and statues ceased in the 19th century, when the palace was turned into a military hospital. Most of the statues were lost; the St. John statue now stands in the courtyard of the Primate's Palace , and the statues of atlants are in the town of Kittsee Today, the restored palace with its
