Slovak is mutually intelligible with Czech. Slovak, as a written language, did not exist until the end of the 18th Century, when Anton Bernolak, a Roman Catholic priest set about to create a Slovak literary language. He based his creation on the Western Slovakian dialect and produced a phonetic spelling (one that is written as it is pronounced). Bernolak published his new language in his "Grammatica Slavica" in 1790. The language was further developed in 1843, when an agreement on the codification of Slovak as a written language was made. This was led by Ludovit Stur, who now chose the Central dialect as the basis, believing it to be the purest form.

O RIENTATION
Identification. Slovan . There are three main regional culture areas: western, central, and eastern. Slovensko is the shortened local name for Slovakia, or the Slovak Republic. Slovaks share a common culture despite regional and even local differences in dialect, local customs, and religion. Hungarians (Magyars) in Slovakia are generally bilingual and have been acculturated but wish to maintain their national culture, especially their language. Location and Geography. Demography. Linguistic Affiliation. Slovak, the national language, uses the Roman alphabet. Along with Czech and Polish, it is classified as a western Slavic tongue in the Indo-European language family. Slovak is very closely related to Czech. Political circumstances beginning nearly a thousand years ago separated populations, but Slovak and Czech are still mutually intelligible. There are three main dialects of Slovak, corresponding to the western, central, and eastern regions. It is said that the pronunciation of particular sounds in the western region is hard, while the dialect of central Slovakia is said to be softer sounding and was adopted historically as the norm. In all but parts of eastern Slovakia, the stress is on the first syllable of a word; longer words (three or more syllables) have secondary accents. There are Slovak words that appear to be formed entirely or mostly of consonants, such as the term for death:

The antecedents of a distinct Slovak culture date from the mission sent to Moravia in AD 863 by the Byzantine emperor Michael III at the request of the Moravian prince Rostislav; the Moravian state then encompassed at least part of the territory of present-day Slovakia. Byzantine determine was short-lived, disappearing from the region after the invasions by nomadic Magyar tribes toward the end of the 9th century. The South Slavs were separated from the Slavs living north of the Danube River, and, as the territory of Slovakia came under Magyar control, it became known as Upper Hungary. The cultural picture of Slovakia is influenced by its geographical situation at the heart of Europe. Slovakia is an integral part of the cultural entity of Central Europe, the foundations of which were laid by numerous nations and ethnic groups; it has been a point of convergence for German, Austrian, Hungarian and Slavic cultures for centuries. The Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are the central authorities of the state administration dealing with governmental international cultural cooperation. Within the framework of its competences, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs carries out primary and secondary cultural activities.
The financing of culture including international cooperation is based on the funds of the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs, on regional and local communities, and on private sources. The Ministry of Culture is responsible for multilateral cooperation in the cultural field. The Ministry is also responsible for the monitoring and administration of treaties and agreements, following the policies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it supports the cultural projects of Slovak communities abroad.
