in terms of dining, smoking, (food) marketplace, and accommodation
(hotel) habits in smaller cities such as Presov, Michalovce, Kosice,

Pleasant room, although a bit basic, but it became clear that the staff worked on the understanding that the guests should feel privileged to be allowed to stay in the hotel. Just one example. After check-in we were still awaiting a room number to be allocated, some minor admin glitch had occurred. No problem, we left our bags at the desk and wandered into the dining room, sat down and studied the menu for dinner. The waiter bustled up and in gestures indicated that we should change tables to another in the far corner. We

      Slovakia: culture, change and tradition
Contemporary Review May, 1995 by Piers Benn
However, there is probably more that the West can do now for former East bloc academia than during the communist years. In Poland and the new fangled Czech and Slovak Republics there is continuing enthusiasm for academic and cultural contacts with us. It is for this reason that, since 1990, I have run annual informal conferences in philosophy in Lublin (Poland), in Prague, and most recently in Bratislava (the Slovak capital). About eight English speaking students travel to one or another of these countries and meet to talk philosophy with a similar number of Czechs, Slovaks or Poles. It is hard to know how long this seriousness will last, and whether it will soon be subordinated by the consumer society. But there is a sincere, warm hospitality and a fusion of moral innocence and intellectual maturity which makes it hard to determine whether western students should be thought more, or less, sophisticated by comparison. Slovak students usually live at home and are drawn from the immediate locality. Their communal university life is therefore limited, and in Slovakia at least, their attitudes to such things as religion and sex are quite conservative - more so than one would find in the Czech Republic or even in Poland, for all the Poles' reputation for fervent Catholicism. In abstract discussion they range here and there, sometimes excited, often frustrated by their lack of access to the major currents of thought and by the difficulty of expressing themselves in English - always, however, passionately serious.

Those of you who eat fish but not mammals. Something to do with their blood temperature?
No, not in my case. But I do think of humans as mammals, and that pigs
and cows are much closer relatives to us than fish.
I prefer vegetarian food when available, but it makes life easier for
the cooks who must cook for me if I accept eating fish.
There are many good reasons for avoiding meat. Environmental, health,
and global economy. A cow or a pig shits out 90% of the proteins it is
fed. Only 10% becomes the meat that humans would then eat. Considering
that even today many people in the world are underfed I think it is
unfair to gobble up so much more than we actually need. Some years ago there was a lasting famine in Somalia. 20% of all children under the age of five suffered permanent brain damage due to shortage of protein in their first years, when the brain is developed. They did not die. They will grow up and have children of their own, which they will not be capable of caring for properly. So it will go

The revolutions in the former communist bloc of Europe now seem distant. There will soon be a new generation of East-Central Europeans, among them students, who will remember little of the old repression. At the same time, the sense of history in the making is beginning to fade for the many Westerners who visit their countries as tourists. During the darkness of the eighties - now remembered with nostalgia by some - a few Western academics set up trusts, such as the Jan Hus Educational Foundation, to sponsor visits by Western lecturers, to smuggle smug·gle

    Culture
Located in the heart of the European continent, Slovakia is a land of approximately 19,000 square miles with about 5.2 million inhabitants. Its natural boundaries are the Tatry or Carpathian Mountains (with a high peak, Gerlach, of 2655 meters) on the north and the Danube River on the south. The Tatras are a skier's paradise. The beauty found in these mountains, along with Slovakia's landscapes and countryside, is awesome. There are several hundred mineral and thermal springs and more than twenty spas in Slovakia. Thousands of visitors from around the world each year utilize these resources for various health ailments. Also, dozens of castles dot the country. Once used as residences for royalty, then later as places of refuge in times of war, many of them are today used as educational, social, or recreation centers, house museums, and gift shops. They are a main attraction for tourists. Many of the castles, and especially the century-old churches, have a breathtaking Gothic architecture which compares to no other. One will find the churches' interiors lined in marble and trimmed in gold, all glistening through crystal chandeliers. The cultural and artistic currents found in Slovakia have strongly prevailed through the centuries to the present day. The people are known for their wood-carving, ceramics, crystal and glass works, and beautifully handcrafted embroidered articles such as tablecloths, napkins, doilies, etc.
