The original Slavic population settled the general territory of Slovakia in the 5th century. Slovakia was part of the center of Samo's empire in the 7th century. The highest point of the 9th century proto-Slovak state known as Great Moravia came with the arrival of Cyril and Methodius and the expansion under King Svatopluk. Eventually, Slovakia became a part of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 11th-14th centuries and as such was later part of Austria-Hungary prior to 1918. In that year Slovakia joined with the regions of Bohemia and neighboring Moravia to form Czechoslovakia. Following the break-up of that country after the Munich Agreement of 1938, Slovakia became a separate republic in the Slovakia that would be tightly controlled by Nazi Germany. Post World War II Czechoslovakia was reinstated and came under the influence of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact from 1945 onward. The end of communist Czechoslovakia in 1989 during the peaceful Velvet Revolution also meant the end for Czechoslovakia as a whole and a creation of two successor states; Slovakia and the Czech Republic went their separate ways after January 1, 1993. Slovakia : History
From the 11th until the early 20th century, present-day Slovakia was under Hungarian rule, either directly or as a part of the Habsburg Empire. Intellectuals seeking to revive the Slovak language and culture began the Slovak national revival in the 19th century. The formation of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918 following World War I satisfied the common aspirations of Czechs and Slovaks for freedom from the Habsburg Empire. As the country came into existence only in 1993 there is not much to be said about Slovakia History . The country of Slovakia was established in the year 1993 on the 1st of January. The archeological excavations have proved the presence of humans in this region during the pre historic era. With the coming of the Romans the history of Slovakia got its unique form. It is believed that from 6th century CE the Slavs are residing in the Central Europe. However the first nation of the Slavs was only created in the ninth century CE. The Slovaks were under the domination of Hungary for a significant amount of time and from the 18th century uprising began for freedom and sovereignty. The similarity of the languages of the Czechs and the Slovaks had caused the identity crisis for the later. To solve this problem and also to develop the feeling of nationalism the Slovak language was codified. In the 20th century for significant amount of time Slovaks were under Nazi domination and later under the Czechs this was also an important period for Slovakian history . After the fall of the Soviet Union and the communists in Czechoslovakia in 1991 uprising began which gave the people of Slovaks independence.

In 1918 the Slovaks joined the closely related Czechs to form Czechoslovakia. Following the chaos of World War II, Czechoslovakia became a communist nation within Soviet-ruled Eastern Europe. Soviet influence collapsed in 1989 and Czechoslovakia once more became free. The Slovaks and the Czechs agreed to separate peacefully on 1 January 1993. Slovakia has experienced more difficulty than the Czech Republic in developing a modern market economy. Expert Slovakia History Vacation Planners

    The Slovaks in History
A.D. In the 9th cent. Slovakia formed part of the great empire of Moravia , under whose rulers Christianity was introduced by Saints Cyril and Methodius . From the Magyar conquest of Slovakia early in the 10th cent. until 1918, Slovakia was generally under Hungarian rule. German and Jewish settlements in Slovakian cities date from the Middle Ages; most of the Slovaks remained peasants in the countryside, although some became burghers. Czech-Slovak contacts, broken after the demise of the Moravian empire, were restored by the 14th cent.; and the 15th-century Hussite movement in Bohemia enjoyed influence in Slovakia. After the Ottoman Turkish victory at in 1526 over Louis II of Hungary and Bohemia, Slovakia, along with western Hungary, fell under Hapsburg rule. It thus escaped Turkish domination but became a stronghold of the great Hungarian nobles, who owned most of the land and treated the Slovaks with contempt. Slovakia, however, played an important political role, with Bratislava serving as the Hapsburg capital, until all of Hungary was finally freed from the Turks in the late 17th cent. Slovakia also enjoyed more religious toleration than much of the Hapsburg empire, and Protestantism thrived.
