Introduction Slovenia Background: The Slovene lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria until 1918 when the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new multinational state, renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though Communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power by the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991 after a short 10-day war. Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy have assisted in Slovenia's transformation to a modern state. Slovenia acceded to both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004. Geography Slovenia Location: Central Europe, eastern Alps bordering the Adriatic Sea, between Austria and Croatia

Lake Bled, Slovenia photo by Johann Jaritz (wikimedia commons) Slovenia is a relatively undiscovered part of Europe.  Filled with forested mountains, lakes and the chalet type houses you’d expect to see in Austria and Switzerland, campervan hire or motorhome rental is a great way of discovering this untouched region and meeting some of the genuine people who live here. The country is diverse and takes on characteristics of its neighbours.  Adjacent to Italy there are the alpine mountains and a short coastal stretch on the Adriatic.  To its border with Austria mountains, rivers and valleys and then there are the lowlands and marshes of the south. Slovenia has a lot of history and not just from way back, more modern history too, which helps understand how the country came to be as it is today.  After World War II Slovenia re-established itself as part of the communist state of Yugoslavia.  The capital was then Belgrade but the people (Slovenes) were unhappy with the ruling power.  In 1991 they fought for their independence and won, thankfully with little bloodshed.  Today Slovenia has come a long way from its communist roots; it is now part of the European Union, NATO and has adopted the Euro as its currency.

Education Geography and topography Slovenia stretches between the Alps, the Adriatic and the Pannonian Plain, covering an area of 20,273 square kilometres. With Austria to the north, Italy to the west, Hungary to the east and Croatia to the south, Slovenia has always been a crossroads of trans-European routes. The port of Koper is a unique Central European sea gateway; the roads and the railway (which as early as 1857 connected Vienna and Trieste) link the Danube region with the Mediterranean, whilst north west-south east connections link Central Europe with the Balkans. The largest part of Slovenia is taken up by the Alps, with several river sources and waterfalls and numerous endemic species of flora and Alpine fauna. 47.3 per cent of the country's population lives in the pre-Alpine hills and valleys. The Alpine region stretches over much of the territory in the northern half of Slovenia, and includes Mount Triglav (2,864 metres high), a large protected natural area of 83,807 hectares, and the Ljubljana and Celje basins, which rank among the most densely-populated parts of Slovenia.

    Slovenia Environment - current issues
Slovenia Geography Environment - current issues: Sava River polluted with domestic and industrial waste; pollution of coastal waters with heavy metals and toxic chemicals; forest damage near Koper from air pollution (originating at metallurgical and chemical plants) and resulting acid rain Definition: This entry lists the most pressing and important environmental problems. The following terms and abbreviations are used throughout the entry:
Acidification - the lowering of soil and water pH due to acid precipitation and deposition usually through precipitation; this process disrupts ecosystem nutrient flows and may kill freshwater fish and plants dependent on more neutral or alkaline conditions (see acid rain).
Acid rain - characterized as containing harmful levels of sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxide; acid rain is damaging and potentially deadly to the earth's fragile ecosystems; acidity is measured using the pH scale where 7 is neutral, values greater than 7 are considered alkaline, and values below 5.6 are considered acid precipitation; note - a pH of 2.4 (the acidity of vinegar) has been measured in rainfall in New England.
Aerosol - a collection of airborne particles dispersed in a gas, smoke, or fog.
