Texas Snakes and More is located in Houston, Texas and gives snakes the respect they deserve. Our reptile presentations educate and inform people about snakes - to dispel myths and misconceptions, and bring about a greater appreciation for these fascinating creatures. Texas snakes are plentiful, beautiful and exciting to watch, capture and handle, if you love snakes the way we do. If you don't, there's still plenty to learn and respect. The venomous snakes found in the US are the rattlesnake, cottonmouth, copperhead and coral snake, and they all live in Texas, along with over 100 species and subspecies of non-venomous snakes. Identifying the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes on sight is essential to safety, peace of mind and field collecting. If you know how to identify the four venomous snakes, you can know which snake is venomous or non-venomous, thereby enabling yourself to have an immediate plan of action.

Expert: Jenna - 1/23/2008 Question Answer Hey Ray 1. I've found this is more a learned behavior. The more you gently handle them as babies, the more they like being out on you and being handled. Many cornsnakes I know love being carried around and looking about. 2. Although snakes don't technically need natural sunlight, I think it's always a good idea to once a week take them out for a half hour or so.

Pet Snake Forum And Discussion Board Snakes General PDA View Full Version : Adventure feeding 10-24-2006, 12:31 AM My snake is a porker and absolutely loves to eat, and to make that a little more exciteing for him I was thinking that it may be fun for my snakes to try and catch a mouse in a Hamster pens with the tunnels and "look outs" in it. I would of course make sure that there was no place for the snake to get stuck or be in too awkward of a position to strike the mouse. I haven’t done this yet or even acquired the hamster habitat, but it seemed like a neat way to entertain my snake and I was wondering if anyone had any input either way. Lawren 10-24-2006, 04:06 PM In zoo's, they always try to do things to make animals use their brains and their natural skills; this helps their minds stay sharp and keeps them from getting bored. While you're thinking in the right direction, I have doubts that your idea will work.
The hampster habitats I'm assuming you're referring to are habitrails. If you're referring to something different, then maybe it would be ok, but that's what I'm basing my answer on.
Some of the tunnels in habitrails are quite small. While it might be small enough for your snake to fit through, I don't think it's small enough for any snake to strike, then wrap itself around the prey and kill it.

Stripe pattern Generally, you can recognize this most common of all New England snakes by its pattern of yellow stripes on a black or brown background. Although the pattern is variable, it usually consists of a narrow stripe down the middle of the back and a broad stripe on each side. Between the center and each side stripe are two rows of alternating black spots. A dark line separating the yellow side stripe from the belly is not particularly bold as it is in the ribbon snake. Background color is usually brown or black, but may be somewhat green or reddish. Stripes may be tan, yellow or orange. A garter snake will occasionally appear more checkered than striped. The scales are keeled and the belly is yellow or pale green.

    http://www.caringtogether.com/exotics/snakes2.html

    Enclosure and Space Requirements
As a general rule, snakes require relatively little space because of their limited and nonexertional activity. Generally speaking, the size of the enclosure should allow inclusion of certain required items (discussed below) and still allow the snake adequate space to stretch out and move about. Snakes will use both the horizontal and vertical space within their enclosure if provisions are made for this activity. Aquaria or other similar glass or Plexiglas-lined enclosures are usually most suitable because they allow optimum visualization of and safety for the occupant(s), and help to maintain desirable environmental temperatures and generally high relative humidity levels. Wire-lined enclosures may afford adequate visualization of the snake but certainly cannot contribute to the maintenance of desirable environmental temperature and humidity levels. Further, such enclosures promote injuries to the rostrum (nose and surrounding tissues) as snakes repeatedly attempt to "escape" through the wire mesh. Any enclosure used must have a secure top and be escape-proof. All hinges and locks should be secure. All snakes are potential "escape artists" and many (especially the California King snakes) can escape form almost any apparently secure enclosure.

    SNAKE EYES
A Illusion review by Joan Ellis.
"Snake Eyes" dims Brian De Palma's reputation as master of the weird surprise. The master has grown lazy. He uses the camera to create an eerie atmosphere without building a good story to support it, and then he adds a fraudulent touch: he thinks we won't notice. The movie opens in the Atlantic City Arena, soon to be razed and replaced by the Millenium Hotela cash machine for its crooked owner. Befitting the nature of casino culture, the arena is windowless and dark, quickly seducing patrons to the business at hand: parting with their money at the gaming tables or on tonight's prizefight. No clocks or windows exist to remind them that there is another life outside. The hall is shuttered against reality even though Hurricane Jezebel is whipping into town with the sole purpose, it seems, of lifting an image from "Indiana Jones." The Secretary of Defense has arrived to watch the fight, his adrenaline running high after a successful missile test that will enrich the corporation that builds it. Within moments we know that corporate greed and gambling greed have become one under this big top tonight. But don't think for a moment that you'll be able to figure out who's who. Nicolas Cage delivers a manic turn as a sleazy cop, Rick Santoro, who wants to be mayor of Atlantic City. Working the arena in a flat-collared brown and yellow shirt, he glad-hands everyone he knows, makes deals here and there, and finally settles in to watch the fight with Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise), a childhood buddy who has made it big as a naval commander. Tonight, Kevin is in charge of security for the visiting Secretary of Defense.

    Acting saves ‘Snake Eyes’

Predictable plot slides by with savvy performance by Nicolas Cage
    BY MARGARET A. McGURK
    The Cincinnati Enquirer

Nicolas Cage really, really loves to act. You want proof? Watch Snake Eyes , a murder mystery set in an Atlantic City boxing arena during a hurricane. Mr. Cage plays Ricky Santoro, a mercurial Atlantic City detective who is crooked enough to shake down drug dealers to fund his illegal gambling habit and to buy gifts for the girlfriend his wife has never met. He’s wildly excited about seeing the bout, having gone to high school with the champ (Stan Shaw). He has a ringside seat thanks to his best friend (Gary Sinise), now a Pentagon security boss guarding the secretary of defense. We learn all of that about Ricky in the first 20 minutes, as the camera follows him in one uncut shot through the building and to the ring, where the assassination takes place. People move in and out of the picture, the setting unfolds, hints and clues are revealed, and Ricky is on screen for almost every moment. It is a bravura display of acting from Mr. Cage, and equally dazzling work from director Brian De Palma. The story is set in real time, within the arena-hotel-casino site and the boardwalk outside; Mr. De Palma turns restriction into chances for smart pacing — such as the suspenseful and cleverly staged chase through a hotel.
